The explosion occurred after a guard fired at two women as they attempted to enter the Imambargah carrying locally made explosives.
A gatekeeper, identified as Muhammad Khan, and one of the women were injured. The other woman died on the spot.
The injured have been taken to Jinnah hospital for treatment.
Police have taken the alleged bomber's husband and the injured woman - whose condition is stable - into custody and security officials are gathering information from witnesses at the scene.
Ambulances have reached the location and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) has also been called to investigate the incident.
Attacks on Imambargahs and the Shia community have increased in the recent past.
On December 17, an explosion outside an Imambargah in Gracy Lines had killed three people including a policeman and injured 16 others.
A young suicide bomber had tried to cross the police picket to enter the Imambargah, where a Majlis was ongoing, according to police.
Shia professionals have also been killed in many incidents of targeted attacks across the country.

The question to ask is: how come the security around there did not see this package lying there? Strangely ppl r praising the supposed bravery of the police, while residents of PECHS r suspecting the security of being involved. That seems natural given that the maid and her family have no connections to any terror group, and are well known in the area.
Media is wrong.
Woman named Nasreen was blown up when she picked a shopper thinking of it as some sort of a thrown (stray) toy. She used to work at Furwa homes and at Sadaf Palace next door since last seven years, hence known to all chowkidars of mohalla. It is sad that all channels have mis-reported this one. No police encounter, no guard stopped her. And why should they. She was not a terrorist, which our media has made her out. It is a reminder of our callous, hopeless media.
She also worked at our home during Ramazan (Bomb went off just near my apartment and not near Imam Bargah). Don't panic public please by misreporting.
hope they publish the interrogation of the woman captured as to who the handler was.....
Bomber was not shot by police, a private guard took her down. Security forces have nothing to do with it.
those arrested should have been killed instantly. that is the only way to dispense justice these days. government, its police and courts are no good in providing peace and security.
Such acts of bravery should also be rewarded financially. The guards children should be given the best of education at the very least !
Pakistan Parliament should pass a resolution against the martyrdom of this "Patriotic Pakistani".
Kudos to the security!
Tribune should reconsider their editorial policy on headlines - "Security forces block attempted suicide blast" is a more fair description, which will recognize the forces' achievement, help improve their morale as well as the public's confidence in them.
Alhumdolillah that people were saved and kudos to guards for excellent work.
Thumbs up for the vigilant guard, well done
