What moral platform policymakers have to ask people to pay tax when their own house is not in order.
BOURNEMOUTH, UK: This is with reference to Adam Thomson’s article “Tax avoidance is cheating Pakistan” (December 14). I cannot agree more with what has been mentioned in this article. It is imperative for the state to follow the principles of good governance by exceeding their tax collection targets. The International Monetary Fund guidelines should be taken in a constructive manner to achieve the desired results.
However, I find it extremely difficult to understand what moral platform policymakers have to ask people pay their taxes when their own house is not in order. Unless we create an environment to discourage the glorification of corruption and offer incentives to the honest citizens of Pakistan, it would be challenging to set things right. As an expatriate Pakistani, I thank the writer for his sincere concerns and recommendations for my country.
