Cameron travelled to the southwestern city of Chengdu on the third day of what embassy officials said was the largest ever British trade mission to the country.
British officials say £5.6 billion-worth of deals have been signed so far on the trip, but Cameron has been derided by both Chinese state-run media and the country's sharp-tongued Internet users.
The prime minister last Friday set up his own microblogging page on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, attracting more than 230,000 followers by Wednesday.
He invited netizens to ask questions, saying that he would aim to reply during the visit.
One of the most popular questions was posted by a prominent Chinese think-tank, the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, which is headed by former vice-premier Zeng Peiyan and includes as its members many top government officials and leading economists.
"When will Britain return the illegally plundered artefacts?" the organisation asked, referring to 23,000 items in the British Museum which it says were looted by the British Army, part of the Eight-Nation Alliance that put down the Boxer Rebellion at the end of the 19th century, a popular uprising against the incursion of European imperial powers in China.
To the Chinese, the ransacking of the Forbidden City, and the earlier destruction of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing in 1860 - about which one British officer wrote: "You can scarcely imagine the beauty and magnificence of the places we burnt. It made one's heart sore to burn them" - remain key symbols of how the country was once dominated by foreign powers.
Even now the ruling Communist party appeals to nationalism to bolster its popularity.
Beijing was outraged by Cameron's meeting with the Dalai Lama - who it condemns as a dangerous separatist - last year, which led to a diplomatic deep-freeze between the two nations.
Despite the trip being billed as a trade mission, it has widely been seen as an attempt to repair some of the damage caused to China-British relations.
But a leading state newspaper launched an attack on Cameron Tuesday, saying Britain should recognise it is not a major power but "just an old European country apt for travel and study" in an editorial under the headline "China won't fall for Cameron's 'sincerity'".
The prime minister has taken more than 100 businesspeople with him to China, including the heads of Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Royal Dutch Shell and the chief executive of the London Stock Exchange.

Please return Kohinoor and Swords of Tipu and King Shivaji.. and many other things..
Despite, space mission and being hub of IT, Indian govt. feels cowardly in demanding their own right from the west, Indians get bad treatment pretty much everywhere but all westerners are treated like VVIP in india
We really need to destroy this mentality of giving superiority to the westerners and looking down upon our own blood. Lets hope for the best for our country and our continent, that is our identity.
Just trying to imagine, how our media would have reacted to a group who would have asked the same from Britain.
@;-)chief: What about India occupied Jammu & Kashmir…..????
What do you mean by India occupied Jammu and Kashmir? The whole world is aware of Jammu and Kashmir being an integral part of India, and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).
Pakistan should give back POK, Gilgit-Baltistan and Baluchistan to the people it belongs.
@dude: dude, this is Pakistani news website ! keep your Indian obsessions to Indian websites.
A good move by China in which India and Pakistan can both join and ask Britain to pay trillions of pounds for wealth looted during its two hundred rule over undivided India.
@Ali ZEE: the Kohinoor does not belong Pakistan but to India. Read history books not written in Pak.
China is the new British empire...the sleeping giant of yesteryears now on the prowl and prey.
@Bob: hey Bob, racism just doesn't cut it anymore, grow up.
@Singh
Before Ranjit Singh it was owned by Ahmed Shah Durrani, before Ahmed Shah Durrani it was Nadir Shah, before Nadir Shah it was Aurangzeb, before Aurangzeb it was Shah jahan and it goes back to Ala Udding Khilji who was Afghan King/Emperor.
So does it belong to the Sikhs?I dont think so....
@Ali ZEE: If you are Indian, then your demand is legitimate. Anyway, Kohinoor is very dangerous, whichever monarchy possessed it, .... finished in due course of time. Some of the known are: Krishna, whose Capital was destroyed after his death. Kings in Delhi in 11th century, Mughals, Persian King, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and then Mighty British Empire all destroyed after its possession. Recently, Britishers cut it in to pieces: Britain got divided in two pieces just after that with Ireland got separated. Would you like o have such a dangerous piece of diamond ?
@Ali ZEE: China or any other country can claim Artefacts but no country can claim gold, diamonds or other precious natural items. Artefacts such as Paintings have real makers and owners but gold and diamonds have been transfered, stolen, robbed by one ruler to other. Therefore to find real owner is impossible.
Return the money / treasures Pakistan looted -- Bangladesh should tell Pakistan.
@Ali ZEE: Kohinoor belong to Sikh. It was taken away from Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh son not from Abdali.
Yeah, if you want to proudly push the human rights issue, shows some integrity first.
The Brits create a mess and conflict where ever they attempt to colonise and conquer - whether it be India, Afghanistan, Ireland, US, China, Australia..... the list goes on. The Brits know nothing other than violence, rape and pillaging during their world wide conquests of other nations' wealth. This is best explained by which country first commenced African slavery to provide cheap labour to the "New World." The Brits can start correcting their past bad deeds by resettling all peoples of Indian descendants who currently live in Fiji. The Poms originally transported cheap Indian labour to work in the British controlled sugar industry in Fiji. Unfortunately, when the Poms left, they took their profits with them back to Britain, and left their liabilities/trash behind in Fiji, rather than take their cheap slave labour back with them. Now the poor Fujian's are being outbreed by Indians who breed faster than jack-rabbits. Why must the Fujian's have to suffer in their own homeland and eventually become a minority, and clean up Britain's mess?
@Saranya: Lol.....
@ Guru What about Junagadh, Hyderabad and Goa?
@Nikki: What about pakistan administrated kashmir and balochistan?
These treasures are safer in British hands. Just imagine what would've happened to the Kohinoor diamond in the grubby hands of our politicians! And look at what the Taliban did to the Bamiyan Buddha or the Hindu Fundos to the Babri Masjid!
@ Ibrahim: it was Nadir Shah who stole the Peacock Throne. It is now in Iran!
I do not think the Chinese should hold their breath waiting for a safe return of their artifacts. The British upper classes have traditionally been, since 1066, nothing more than a bunch of robber barons. Criminals are almost always reluctant to return loot.
Chinese demand hold all the moral, legal n ethical right to demand. It's about time Britain must also return stolen wealth from Sub-Continent of Indian n Africa. So called oldest democracy has been the thief of common wealth countries assets n should be held responsible.
Way to go China (Y)
Also return our KOHINOOR
For a sample..most of the world's famous diamonds are from India, but who possess them now? At least Chinese had sense to question the British. Good.
The fact is that British stole books from Spain during the ottoman empire , artifacts from China , The peacock throne and Kohinoor from the subcontinent. Maybe more countries should shun the eyewash of common wealth and demand the Brits to return the loot to the country of origin. I fully back the SriLankan President for his no fear approach displayed during the last summit. About time the Brits are made to realize that they never were and never will be as industrialized , sophisticated and articulate as they pose to be. As a matter of fact they are better off being categorized as looters , plunderers , mere followers and fake.
I support China's genuine demand.
Time has come for the British, Japanese and american people to teach china a lesson. Arrogant china is demanding the plundered artifacts but when will it return the stolen land of TIBET, MANCHURIA and EAST TURKESTAN to its people. Its a perfect case of a kettle calling a pot black. China has been a land grabber through out its history .Arrogance is the first sign of downfall. China with its new found wealth is unnecessarily threatening every other country , lets see when it meets its match.
When will Indian leadership shows similar guts to ask such? Im not expecting such from congrees. Anyone else?
Britain has to pay price for all these activities in Asian countries . Now time for Asian powers to grab UK .
