The judiciary has played an exemplary role in upholding the supremacy of the Constitution and has ensured that public power is exercised within the Constitutional framework, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the second phase of the renovation of the Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court.
Sitting judges of the apex court and Lahore High Court; former judges; and senior lawyers were present on the occasion.
Justice Chaudhry said justice was a fundamental right of every citizen. The Constitution provided for inexpensive and expeditious justice for all.
He reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law.
“Our courts have played a vital role in this regard and I hope that they can find new dimensions to realise the goals and objectives set out in the Constitution,” he said.
Justice Chaudhry further said the courts were the saviours of the downtrodden and vulnerable members of the society. “Pakistan is home to various ethnic, racial and linguistic groups. Our courts have extended equal and impartial hearing to all,” he said.
The courts had addressed several controversial issues with dignity and sincerity, he said. The reasoned judgements passed in the courts had earned the judiciary universal respect and regard from citizens.
Discussing the renovation of the Lahore Registry, Justice Chaudhry said the building had been restored and reinvigorated. “This construction sends a message of the things we value as a society. We are privileged to enjoy it and are obligated to treasure it,” he said.

Courts give decisions not justice. Superior courts conducted battles of politicians and rulers on the cost of public and their verdicts in this respect were never implemented. Therefore benefits of such decisions did not reach public at large. Besides, disposal of cases of common people did not get attention of the judiciary that had been waiting their disposal since decades. Justice is the best welfare of people belonging to all segments of life but in Pakistan despite claims of the judges justice was still an unfulfilled dream. Had there been justice present turmoil’s all around would have been not there. Judges should speak truth and do not hide their false and biased performance. They have been giving decisions keeping in view personalities and protecting their service. They had also failed to establish high court benches to meet demand of lawyers and public at division levels. People had lost confidence in the courts for their slow and poor performance.
