No regrets over Lal Masjid: Musharraf

Former president says those killed in Lal Masjid were terrorists and no woman was killed in the operation.

DALLAS: Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has said that those who were killed in Islamabad’s Lal Masjid were terrorists and insisted that no woman was killed during that operation, adding that out of 150 only 94 terrorists, including two foreign nationals, were killed in the July 2007 encounter.

The former president was addressing a public meeting of All Pakistan Muslim League in Dallas on Saturday. The former general dwelt at length on Pakistan’s political situation and the issues of Dr Qadeer and Taliban.

Musharraf clarified that he had never apologised for the Lal Masjid episode. According to him, Lal Masjid was a “den of terrorists” and as a head of state it was his duty to restore the writ of the state. He said that the government tried its best to settle the Masjid issue peacefully. “We also invited the Imam of Ka’aba for mediation, but all in vain. Since, we never wanted to turn Pakistan into a Taliban state, we took action”.

“I have apologised on the issue of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), which I had to accept on the advice of my political advisers.”

The former president said that when he was in uniform, people called him a dictator. Pointing at himself, he said that “dictatorship lies in the brain, and it is a mindset and uniform has got nothing to do with it”.

Referring to Dr Qadeer’s confession, the former dictator termed the nuclear scientist “a liar”, adding that Dr Qadeer “sold” nuclear secrets to three countries and he (Musharraf) had valid proof.

Denying that his government had harassed the nuclear scientist, he said that whatever Dr Qadeer had said on television he had done so voluntarily and he was not forced to do so, said Musharraf.

“I saved Dr Qadeer because he is a national hero, and I also consider him national hero,” he said, adding: “It is also a fact that he (Qadeer) made mistakes.”

The public meeting was also addressed by Coordinator of APML’s Dallas coordinator Javed Siddiqui. As many as 500 people attended the public meeting.

Earlier, General Musharraf was received by party leaders Ameer Sukhano, Dr Hassan, Dr Tasnim Agha, Naeem, Nadeem Akhter Azeem Siddiqui Tanvir Malik, Dr Arjumand, Khalil Qureshi Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, Nadem Chaudhry and others.

Tehreek-i-Insaf local chapter staged a peaceful demonstration against the former dictator.

Lal masjid episode might have helped musharaf to gather some brownie points to please bush administation, but bush is chilling out at his ranch in texas and present administation is interested in Gen.Kayani and Zaradari. He has been dumped by those foreign rulers. Musharaf's insistence on being not sorry for the killings show how deeply hurt he is from inside and the only solace he may find is in to keep justifying his blunders.He should think about a mea culpa.

Then we should also not forget the requests (not warnings) by the government, delegations and Imam-e-Kaba himself to settle down the matter. The Musharraf is now being missed by majority of Pakistanis. His only mistake is that he did not have his own group of public representatives. Chaudhry brothers were with him just "khao, mauj urao aur jao". He took them as their party. It was his sillyness.

I myself have seen military type bukers with sand bags on top of the mosque before operation. For what purpose, can Nina or others answer? Every body live and on electronic media has seen the Burqa Faroosh ladies with a long bomboo in their hands and male studens in parallel on the roads with automatic wapens; who can reluctant? How the sample peoples can engage the Pak Army for 1 week? Is it not true that they kidnapped the chinese to the mosque, And like my most of the people have heard Ghazi telling the media that we have sueiside bombers. Did'nt he asked a safeway for himself and his foreign colleagues, Did'nt his elder brother tried to skip under Burqa? All this is enough to believe who were they.

Most of the Arabs here are fighting their own regimes in their countries. They had a space in Afghanistan which has now been denied by the ISAF. Pashtoons are na integral part of this country and like this country but they are treated in an unjust way. Thats rubbish I remember very well Chaudhry Shuja'at even went to meet the clerics but the talks came to a dead end he even made a statement about being utterly disappointed. The media reported their conversations every now and then. The cleric wanted to escape himself wearing a burqa but left his own brother to die in there! They were terrorists the whole world saw it. Musharraf had them killed out of no choice.

So far LAL MASJID is concerned they didn't listen to even the IMAM e KABBA they had thier own religion to follow. They were the first and only INNOCENT believers who resisted for more than one week the army of commandoes who can even terrify the whole indian army. If you remember Musharraf was the one who started the operation in Bajur and Waziristan though the later followed but that was in order to clean up the area of terrorists, Pashtun tribes have been the soldiers of Pakistan forever and we all care for them and want them to be there for PAksitan always but we want the fundamentalist taliban fanatics out of Khyber. Unfortunately many anchors of Paksitan criticize the operation and say the army is killing the innocent which in my opinion is not true... The strategic operation is needed if we want pakistan void of terrorists not just in Khyber Pakhtoon but in whole country, and its bold men like Musharraf who can take such decisions not puppet ministers of our existing govt.

If it would be a sacred place for worship then what reason of holding such countless automatic weapons with gas mask.It is a clear crystal fact that if our mosques are used only for worship and like other legal preaches then definitely no one can dare to take any unfavorable action.But what the then president of Pakistan (Musharaf) has committed is somewhat reasonable action.The mosque administration were pampering some miscreants who were also taking part in Waziristan operation against our military.But he has done it after a long discussion with the then administration to hand over the militants who were sheltered within the mosque,when it was rejected then as last option he take over the place.

Abaabeel | 13 years ago | Reply I still remember that after the operation at Lal Masjid, an army officer was showing off the ammunition to media personnel, confiscated during the operation. It also contained rockets and rocket launchers. Talat Hussain asked the army officer, that since the presumed terrorists were fighting till death, how come they did not use the heavy weaponry that you are showing us?...The army officer was stunned and he had no reply. I still do not know if operation was the only feasible option? May be stoppage of electricity, water, food and gas etc had made the militants surrender?....In any case it was a big tragedy

This very blessing is not thrown around to fall in the lap of people like Mush, who display scorn, vengeance, rage and bravado to kill a fly (weak) with cannon and capitulate on a phone call once remotely called by a stronger. HE was in direct command of the operation against the inmates of Lal MASJID,AND USED MAXIMUM,EVEN THE PROHABITED MUNATION AND FORCE, once the issue was about to settle peacefully(according to Chudhries )and as usual succumbed to the mid night p-call of Condoleezza. The remains of minors in the rubble and the charred bodies bundled in groups in body bags were the count figure called 94. . Name any body that opposed his policies or telling the truth is a liar according to Mush morals, may that be Chudhries, Sharief brothers, Dr A Q Khan, Jamalies and so on .His seniors are pseudo intellectuals and spent force . A Q Khan was ,is and will remain a national hero in the history of Pakistan where as Mush will be remembered as a Penuche, a renege, and a brawn with out brain. Repentance and humility are in the destiny of the blessed ones.

When will we ever shun conspiracy theories and start believing in reality? They say hundreds of women and children were killed! Why dont we see the families of those "innocent" killed in laal masjid protesting in front of press clubs?? Oh yes and the big one...why dont our beloved and super efficient CJP takes his ever so popular suo moto notice of the "killings" and ask you to present those "eye witnesses"

IZ | 13 years ago | Reply I am not a fan of Musharraf at all, but despite a few misgivings about the way in which the operation was handled, generally I cant fault Musharraf for the Lal Masjid episode. The terrorists inside who were collecting arms, sheltering criminals and vandalizing the area had to be dealt with. It was their own actions that escalated the situation into full-blown warfare in the capital. And it was the terrorists who were obstructing a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Innocent people certainly did get caught up in the middle, but lets be honest and put blame where it really lies. Musharraf can be blamed for a lot of misguided actions, but this was not one of them.

White phosphorus is used in artillery shells and can cause second to third degree burns to the skin. It sticks to the skin which result in deep tissue scars. More can be read about it online. Currently only US and Israel is known to have used white phosphorus in artillery shells and no other military has known to use it. Pakistan army does not have phosphorus artillery in its arsenal as it is an item which is banned from being provided to Pakistan. The only other way army could have used this compound was bringing in huge drums and pouring it over dead bodies but that could not have escaped as so many camera's were pointing towards the lal terrorist center. Even if army used it the compound can not dissolve the whole body and is highly inflammable and can burn for hours consuming everything until the oxygen runs out. The structure of lal terrorist center is still up and on close inspection of the floor and ground one can see no phosphorus was poured as it would have left tell all signs. In islam we are asked not to spread baseless rumors and if one hear something we are to investigate it before spreading it. I leave it to the readers to make up their mind and I implore them to go read about this chemical compound before passing around unsubstantiated rumors.

Red Mosque was actually the Safe Heaven for So called Islamic terrorists Yesterday, Khateeb of Lal Masjid and four of it's terrorists once again nominated as Killers of security forces in Islamabad by a Pakistani Independent Court.

Shani Syed | 13 years ago | Reply I just wanna say one thing that kept on nagging me ever since the Lal masjid operation...perhaps it could have been managed in a different way, had their been terrorist activities going on as we all know their were fundamentalists with dreams to take over Islamabad, Musharraf should have addresed the nation immediately explaining why it happened how it happened showing poof of terrorism taking place in the masjid so the nation would have been on his side and taken under confidence, so we all could have had answers as who when why and how... it wasnt so approperiately dealt with Musharraf does have a liability to lear the mess in the mind of the nation regarding the operation just saying he aint sorry and it was a terrorist den wont be sufficient he should deal it in a better way... as for AQ, He is our national hero and shall always be, I think there are many unanswered question here too one opinion may be allwas done to protect AQ frm being a hostage to america another may be he was offered as a sacficial lamb... still both need to be cleared up before the next ellections. Yes, dictators, do have a typical mindset and Mush represents that mindset- they think that they are indispensible in the "best interest" of the country but our nation has proved again and again that its a forward looking nation and it hates "Dictators". Mullah extremism was a gift of an earlier dictator (Lal masjid always had good relations with the deep state) and mind it Musharaf was representing the same deep state although he was also used by the powerful and then dumped. The same is true for Lal Masjid mullahs they were also agents of the same state but later on turned out to be a threat to the writ of Mush Govt................ridiculous. Mush is still telling half cooked stories when will he have that courage to tell the nation the "real truth". Well cowards can't.

All citizens should know that there were terrorists inside the lal masjid, who were armed with latest weapons and were ready to carry out suicidal attacks. It was General Pervez Musharraf who tolerated them for so long, gave them many chances to come out and surrender, but they did not. When army operation was carried in lal masjid it was made sure that no women would be harmed. Musharraf still respected them because they were citizens of Pakistan. Now rivals of Musharraf are targeting him through this issue and Bugti's issue. Problem is with the mindset of people. Understand Musharraf, he is the only person to save Pakistan from all the crisis.

sameera | 13 years ago | Reply Musharaf claimed to be the Ataturk of Pakistan, to weed out terrorism and exclude religious fanaticism from Pakistan but under his watch some of the worst situations took place and Lal masjid was one of them. The Question to be asked and answered is not whether he is sorry or not-what good does that do? He let everyone down. and while a sorry may work in day to day relationships and lives, it is the not the same here. Why do we want to bring back someone who has already harmed our country and our people? lets not throw the argument, well he is better than the rest. yes, thats the way to run a country, pick the lesser of two evils. The juncture that our country is in, the plight of the people, not you and I who are sitting reading the news online, but the people who barely make two ends meet and those who dont, should be made first priority. That is what each party claims to do when IN power, how come no one is doing anything right now and waiting to come into power? Im sure there are ways you dont have to be in the government to make a difference. that's what is fundamentally wrong with all of this. get over yourself and your parties and stand together as people as countrymen and HELP those who are so helpless. We will all die one day and have to answer to God, that is something lots of people seem to forget.

All those who are saying it was full of terrorists, should please explain if they or anyone they knew attended this place? Do they have first hand accounts of what exactly took place or are they just blindly accepting what the tv channels are saying? I have spoken to persons who witnessed the mass burials of so many innocent women/girls from this operation? Are any of you even aware that our own govt used white phosphorous against those inside? These people loved Islam and abhorred evil and immorality so they were labelled terrorists? The biggest lie is that those inside did not want to negotiate! They did want to negotiate but the govt. wanted to do the operation to show Master USA that they are willing to kill for them. There were no weapons amassed in the Lal Masjid, this was a lie by the govt in order to win the hearts/minds of the Pakistanis. Up until this operation I admired Musharraf, but now he should be held accountable

farnis | 13 years ago | Reply We should analyze everything rationally, we are al human beings and we will always make mistake as we are always in hurry.I distinctly remember that during the Lal masjid crisis everywhere there were news about what the govt is doing and why did the govt did not do anything for so long and how can the mighty ISI did not know about this. I am pretty sure that they knew what is happening and I am also sure that the huge arm and ammunition that was found there must be there for some use. No newspaper , no other media not even any alternate news on the Internet discussed it throughly after the fact and no known person was called from the Army or any agencies to reply the question that arose, we all choose the sides and started talking accordingly.I think that do not have any other thing then to tlak about everything. See what is happening now, all the problems of the Flood and the people have been set aside and we are talking about Supreme Court and the Govt .What a shame for all Pakistanis and what a shame for the Supreme court, instead of just letting it pass they joined together in late night and came out the notification,It seems they have also become a party and will fight to have their power of share like any other party.The final question is ARE WE A RESPONSIBLE NATION AND PEOPLE WHO CAN LIVE PEACEFULLY WITH ITSELF AND WITH OTHERS As Mr Mushrraf rightly said at his Farewell speech PAKISTAN KA KHUDA HE HASFIZ

" What a joke :-) The fact is: Terrorist were killed in Red Mosque, neither they were muslim nor I consider them Pakistanis. There were plain Terrorists. Mosque is a place of prayers not for terror or guns. This is nothing to do about patience. In this case all of them should have been delt with. There is a law, a country and no group should be allowed to create havoc like this.

And btw, did these people achieved their objectives, the current gov't is the most corrupt and in no way Islamic. Why is the maulana not doing anything against the current system? He had many people killed while he escaped in a burqa. The only way he can redeem himself is by repeating the same thing, and I want to see how current gov't handles this. If I was standing in front of red mosque, and it was a time for prayer, I would rather miss that prayer, then to go to that mosque.

The Mullah later found in the Burkah was just being used by external forces of Masjid and internal political forces of Pakistan.

It is shame for all those who converted this mosque into their crimes den. May god curse be upon those who misuses the name of Islam, abused the worship place by keeping all the criminals there and killing innocent people. The Madrissa was also being misused. Decency does not allow me to write what these goons were using the place for.

Then we love to call ourselves "citadel of Islam". No mullah should be allowed to blackmail the government but Mush's action on lal masjid left a lot to be desired.

Allah Ditta | 13 years ago | Reply Yes that's true lal masjid operation was against terrorists who were openly chalenging the writt of the state. Many warnings and negotitations were shown live on all tv channels. So Musharraf's stance on lal masjid is justified and correct.
