SRINAGAR: Indian army said one of its soldiers was killed when Pakistani troops allegedly fired early Monday across the Line of Control (LoC).

The soldier was killed just after midnight at an army post along the northern part of the heavily militarised border, an Indian army spokesperson said.

Indian army did not fire back and instead lodged a protest with the Pakistani army over a hotline, said the army's spokesman in Srinagar, Naresh Vig.

"It is a ceasefire violation. A junior commissioned officer was killed as Pakistani soldiers fired at an Indian army post in Uri sector at 12:15am," Vig told AFP.

The incident came hours after senior officials of the two armies held scheduled phone talks on Sunday aimed at easing tensions in the region, that has recently seen some of the worst firing since a ceasefire agreement a decade ago.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the truce agreed in 2003.

India's Border Security Force said last week that 50 frontier posts had been targeted in an escalation of small arms firing and shelling over the last month - despite public pledges to reduce tensions there.

Pakistan, in turn, accused India of killing a Rangers soldier and two civilians last Wednesday during firing and injuring 26 civilians.

@Np really india never attack hahah biggest joke of the year you should get the award for it. Pakistan didn't attack but carry out a covert operation in kashmir in 1965 but instead india attack on lahore and sialkot sector so pakistan can move its forces from kashmir to international border. and there is a lot of proof for that who attack who. hahahah really seriously hahah u mean indian coward army who lost to china and what about the so called militants who just come out of nowhere and kick indian army butt and leave. Let me get this straight your coward its so coward they rape women in kashmir they kill their kids and innocent unarmed civilian thats the real face of your coward army. Your coward army is so scared to take on pakistan. Your media say pakistan soldiers come and kill your soldiers inside india really who is more coward think about it? firstly it was Nato not US get your facts right and they didn't bombed they open fire from a gunship helicopter that too from apache. so here is bit of advice first get your facts right. Our soldiers were not scared to call for help they took matter in their own hands fought bravely not cowardly like your army who cries all the time pakistan backed terrorists killed our soldiers please PM take the matter with the USA hahahah thats what your coward army is capable off. Hahahah surrender pakistan called its forces back from kargil under US pressure there was no surrender. Hhahaha really come on wake up stop living in dreams if india army had guts or their nation they would have attacked but they know what pakistan army is capable off like they kicked their butts in 1947, 1965 and 1999 and as for 1971 pakistan army surrender happened when they were assured pakistan army is surrounded from all sides and fighting will bring no result and according to your General pak army fought gallantly it was tough job for indian army to make pak surrender thats your indian army General said in his book,General of coward army.

@Real Hassan: India never attacks but has always made Pakistan regret whenever they attacked India - be it in 1965, 1971 or 1999.

As far as your coward army it could do nothing when US bombed your soldiers for 2 hours. Not one airforce plane flew to their aid. Nor can they take on TTP. As far as India is concerned, clearly you have forgotten the unilateral surrender at Kargill as well as Operation Parakram in response to the attack on Indian parliament after which a panicked Musharraf signed a ceasefire treaty in 2003. For your reference, both these incidents happened AFTER Pakistan became a declared nuclear state.
