Law and its application

Letter October 27, 2013
We need to widen the scope of religious and secular laws to include protection of the environment and animal realm.

ISLAMABAD: It is an axiomatic truth that almost all legal systems in the world “condemn killing” but unfortunately, even then, killing goes unabated in Karachi and others parts of the country. Being a student of law and political science, like many others, I am aware of the fact that there is a difference between the principle of the law and its application. This notion occurs in most countries of the world, including ours. Yet in practice, ‘powerful people’ treat killing as they treat lying. When a man who is desperate kills another person, this small act is defined as murder. But the man who kills or gives orders to kill thousands of people is a hero! That is very unfortunate.

Indeed, all religions and faiths condemn murder, rape, humiliation, and theft and all such principles are based on natural human attitudes and feelings and their core and cardinal function is to inspire human beings to cultivate basic human qualities. In order for both religious and secular laws to conform to the principles of interdependence, we need to widen their perspective to include protection of the environment and the animal realm.
