Wake-up call

Letter October 27, 2013
Electricity has become expensive because power plants that generate it use furnace oil , price of which keeps rising.

LAHORE: The PML-N has suffered the loss of a provincial assembly seat in Faisalabad because it allowed the people to forget the real reason for prolonged power outages — the energy policy of the then PPP government in 1994 and the earlier rejection of the Water Accord of 1991. It was because of these two things that the country was put on the thermal path to the exclusion of hydel generation as a source for electricity. Electricity has now become expensive because the power plants that generate it use furnace oil and the price of oil, which Pakistan imports, keeps rising in the world market.

If the PML-N representatives do not speak up and remain on the defensive, they will face further setbacks in future polls.
