Television and rural India

Letter October 21, 2013
India has over 350 24-hour television channels and they are reaching every nook and corner of the nation.

NEW DELHI: This is in response to Seema Mustafa’s article of October 19 “Electioneering on Indian television”. The writer has presented several incorrect assumptions in her piece. She seems to believe that Indian television does not reach or relate to rural India. India has over 350 24-hour television channels and they are reaching every nook and corner of the nation. Television is acquiring the status of being a mass medium for rural India. The rural population is quite alive to it and makes its own opinion. On the other hand, urban India is fast switching to other modes of communication and opinion-making, i.e., internet, SMS and telephony.
