PESHAWAR: Four police officials were killed in a drive-by shooting on a checkpoint on Ring Road Sunday evening.

Four gunmen riding on two motorcycles opened fire on police officials manning the checkpoint located in the jurisdiction of Pahripura police station.

Four police officials – ASI Amin Jan, ASI Fazal-e-Wahab, Constable Liaquat and Constable Ayub Shah – were fatally injured in the attack. They died while being driven to the Lady Reading Hospital.

“Three of the victims were manning the checkpoint, while ASI Amin Jan was present at the site in civvies,” a local police official told The Express Tribune. An extra contingent of police reached the site and mounted a manhunt for the attackers. Two suspects, said to be Afghan nationals, were detained during the operation, led by SP City Ismail.  The police official added that it was an important checkpoint on the confluence of Ring Road and Dalazak Road – which is an important entry point to the city.

Incensed relatives of the slain policemen staged a vociferous protest by placing the bodies on GT Road near Bala Hisar Fort. Vehicular traffic was suspended for some time. They chanted slogans and blamed the government for the death of their loved ones.
