5.1 magnitude quake jolts Mashkay again

QUETTA: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Mashkay in Balochistan at around 2:37pm on Saturday, Express News reported.

The epicenter of the quake was 72 kilometers West, by Southwest of Khuzdar, placing it near to Mashkay which had been devastated by a series of high magnitude earthquakes in September.

The quake struck at a depth of 24.9km.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale had struck the impoverished area of Balochistan on September 24 followed by a number of aftershocks measuring over 4.5 on the Richter scale had devastated over 50% of all houses in the area, killing at least 500 people and injuring over a 1,000 people.

As many as 125,000 people were affected by the earthquakes.

Quakes keep coming in Mashkay

The death toll from the quakes that hit Balochistan has soared over 500. The most major of the quakes struck on September 24 claiming more than 150 lives by the end of the day it hit Balochistan.

On September 27, an aftershock of the Balochistan earthquake registering magnitude 5 was felt in Awaran. The epicenter of the quake was in Ormara and its depth was around 10 kilometers.

On September 28, a 6.8-magnitude aftershock hit the same area and killed at least 12 more people.

On October 9, tremors were felt once again in areas in Balochistan. This time the epicentre was further east of Khuzdar as a 4.3-magnitude tremblor struck the area.

Relief work

Army figures of their relief efforts released on October 9 showed that they had managed to reach 62,429 of earthquake affected families to provide aid, relief goods, medical attention and tents.

Army has poured 2,400 troops, including personnel from its medical corps, into the affected areas. It has spearheaded relief efforts for inaccessible areas using helicopters and air crafts. It claimed that the pace of relief efforts is improving with every passing day.

The army says it has distributed 36,843 tents and 3,308 tons of rations among 62,429 earthquake affected families.

The NDMA said that as many as 43,660 tents and 18,485 blankets have reached Awaran in addition to over 75,000 food packs and 50 tonnes of high energy biscuits.

@Asad Khan: Japan you say ? Hmm, do you know the difference between an air-burst and an explosion buried deep underground ? And do you know solid granite hills will ring and vibrate like a bell for a long time when stuck by a huge explosion ?
