PARACHINAR: A pro-government tribal elder was gunned down when unidentified assailants fired at him in Masozai area of central Kurram on Monday.

Assistant Political Agent Fazal Naeem said Azeem Khan Masozai was on his way home from a mosque when the accused opened fire at him, killing him on the spot. Khan was also a member of the village defence committee and took part in a number of assaults against militants.

“It is not yet confirmed if Khan was killed by militants or his enemies,” he said.

The official said Kurram Levies rushed to the site and cordoned off the area after the incident. The body was shifted to Sadda Headquarters Hospital and a search operation was launched in which six suspects were arrested under the collective responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulation.

After spending two years in IDP camps in Lower Kurram and Hangu due to a military operation in central Kurram Agency, Khan repatriated to his hometown in Para Chamkani two months back.
