Protecting women’s rights

Letter July 16, 2013
There is still a long way for us to go as far as protecting women’s rights goes.

NIDDERAU, GERMANY: This is with reference to your editorial “A historic milestone” (July 16). The news about Pakistan’s first group of female paratroopers completing its training is great but as the editorial states quite accurately: “It must be remembered that this is just the beginning, the tip of the iceberg, as the numbers also indicate”, I think of the millions of women who have no rights and cannot even step out of their homes without the permission of the men in their families. So, there is still a long way for us to go as far as protecting women’s rights goes. My neighbour here in Europe takes her dogs for a walk every day. When I asked her why she does that, she replied: “It is good for my health and the dog’s health to be in the fresh air and exercise.” And I thought of my sisters in Pakistan who are stuck within the four walls of their homes all their lives.
