LAHORE: Acumen, a non-profit global8 venture firm addressing poverty across Africa and in South Asia, unveiled a community based model for hydel-power generation on Tuesday.

The model has the potential to provide energy to millions of Pakistanis and revolutionise the system dealing with energy needs in the country, said a spokesman for the organisation.

He said that Acumen would start construction of four micro-hydel units to overcome energy needs of isolated rural communities in Pakistan in collaboration with the Aga Khan Rural Support Program. Community based models of energy generation from clean sources can help address the energy crisis in remote and under-served regions in an affective manner, he added. The ultimate objective is to improve the quality of life of local communities by making energy available for small-scale commercial and household uses without burdening precious natural resources such as forests, he added.
