FAISALABAD: At least 25,000 armed police personnel are required to maintain law and order in the city, said Faisalabad City Police Officer (CPO) Riffat Mukhtar Raja on Saturday.

Talking to media, the CPO said the district had a population of 7 million people but only 7,926 policemen. Strong liaison is required between police and the public to control street crime, he said.

The shortage of security personnel has led to a surge in street crime. The indifference of some policemen towards the public can further aggravate the situation, said Raja. Faisalabad had one policeman for every 1,000 citizens. “I have directed all station house officers to address citizens’ complaints and ensure regular patrolling in their areas,” the CPO said.
