ISLAMABAD: Former player Jonathon Power and coach of Pakistan’s top female player Maria Toor Pakai has said that he is looking to train more players from the country in the near future.

Power has been instrumental in providing Maria a lifeline to pursue her career despite threats, and says he is eager to help both male and female players become great athletes.

“I’m looking to train more players from Pakistan because I want to help the country which has given so much to squash,” Power told The Express Tribune at the Mushaf Squash Complex during the ongoing Asian Individual Championship.

“Last time when I came here in October I had an unofficial conversation about it with the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF).”

He added that Pakistan players had an open invitation to train with him, but it was up to the PSF to figure out details regarding the budget.

“If the PSF is ready, we can talk about it and I’ll make it very affordable for them.”

Power reveals Maria’s top-spot target

Power vowed that he will help Maria reach the summit of the sport in two years time as both continue to work hard to achieve a dream that many may not take seriously.

“Maria will be a top-ranked player in two years’ time because she has what it takes to become a champion. We had to give her rest for four months to ensure that her fitness was up to the mark.

“It was one step back but three steps forward as we involved all sciences of sports with physiotherapists and trainers to help her fully recover from recurring injuries.”
