How fair is the fair trial law?

Letter December 24, 2012
Government will have to ensure that privacy of citizens is not violated after passage of bill.

KARACHI: How on earth could a democratically-elected National Assembly pass the controversial Fair Trial Bill? It is beyond comprehension as to why politicians have to succumb to pressure of the establishment and pass such a law. In my opinion, the proposed law would be prone to misuse and could be abused to settle personal scores by the government of the day. Those at helm of affairs and especially heading the intelligence agencies will have to ensure that their subordinates do not misuse the power granted to them to frame innocent people. Also, the government will have to ensure that the privacy of citizens is not violated as a result of measures undertaken after the passage of the bill.
