ISLAMABAD:

The National Assembly on Monday was told that Capital Development Authority (CDA) was earning Rs17.9 billion per year from the installation of hoardings and billboards, but has no policy regarding their content.

“No advertisement should be used which are likely to create a public nuisance,” said Parliamentary Secretary for Cabinet Division Khurram Jahangir Wattoo. He was responding to a notice calling attention to oversized hoardings and billboards in Islamabad that were affecting its  and environment.

Asiya Nasir, a JUI-F MNA, pointed out that several billboards around the city with pictures of female models gave the impression that there was no set policy. “We do not have any policy in this regard,” said Wattoo, adding, that one will be devised.

However, he explained to the members that there was a procedure involved in the installation of every single billboard. Applications for hoardings and billboards are approved by the CDA chairman. He said there were a total of 54 billboards in Islamabad, after which Sajid Ahmed pointed out that some billboards were installed after cutting trees. In response, Wattoo ensured that action would be taken if any trees had been cut for the purpose.
