International Development Secretary Justine Greening said the move, which will save Britain around around £200 million ($320 million) from 2013 to 2015, recognises India's "changing place in the world".
Prime Minister David Cameron has faced growing opposition at home to the aid commitment to India, with commentators often pointing out that Britain's booming former colony is able to fund its own space programme.
International Development Minister Justine Greening said that after visiting India this week with Foreign Secretary William Hague, the relationship with India would now focus on "trade not aid."
"India is successfully developing and our own bilateral relationship has to keep up with 21st century India," Greening said.
"It's time to recognise India's changing place in the world."
As she made the announcement, British drinks group Diageo announced a $2 billion deal to buy up to 53.4 per cent of India's leading spirits maker, giving it a commanding presence in the world's biggest whisky market.
Conservative Cameron's coalition government is trying to save money as part of its efforts to reduce a record deficit.
British aid to India was reduced last year as part of the widespread austerity measures, but still committed London to spending £280 million a year until 2015.
Total spending between 2013 and 2015 will now be £200 million less than had been planned previously, although Britain would complete all of its aid programmes in India, Greening said.
The Department of International Development confirmed in a statement: "Justine Greening will not sign off any new programmes, and financial aid programmes to the country will end completely in 2015."
Cameron has rejected growing pressure from lawmakers in his centre-right party to scrap his pledge to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on overseas aid.
But while he has previously defended aid to India on the basis that tens of millions of Indians live in poverty, an end to the payments has been on the cards for sometime.
Britain was stung in February when New Delhi announced a big contract to buy French warplanes instead of the UK-backed Eurofighter Typhoon.
That came despite intense efforts to expand trade with India, with Cameron leading a huge business delegation to India in one of his first trips after taking office in 2010.
The same year however Britain suffered another snub when India's then-finance minister Pranab Mukherjee - now the president -reportedly dismissed the aid from Britain as a "peanut".
On Thursday, Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid had signalled the country would soon stop receiving aid from Britain after holding talks with Hague.
"Aid is the past and trade is the future, so we are looking to the future," Khurshid told reporters in New Delhi after meetings with Hague.
"We discussed a lot of trade, investment and cooperation issues and I think that is how we see our relationship grow."
Aid groups however said the decision to cut the handouts was premature.
Phil Bloomer of Oxfam said the agency was concerned that completely withdrawing British aid to India by 2015 was "too hasty".
"Despite the fact India is a country of growing wealth it is also a hugely divided country with extreme levels of poverty and inequality. The scale of the challenge remains huge," he said.

@Blithe: india, china and pakistan all have corruption problems.........in india however because of freedom so many issues come up!!!!!!! in pakistan too...in china they remain hidden though....
@Blithe: gini coefficient of india is 0.33 ... a little worse than pakistan's 0.30.....but better than china........75% indians??? lol.....101% indians dude...y dont u get ur facts correct......india's sex ratio is 106:100 compared to pakistan's 105:100...............again wrong.......btw ease of doing business is better in pakistan than all BRIC nations except china......so does that put pakistan better off than 3 nations....our economy will improve dude....y dont u worry about urs...usa is planning to cut ur aid too.................
@Blithe: female infanticide / selective abortion is the worst in the world in India. In the future Indian men will not find ladies to marry and will get frustrated . Ratio at birth in India is 112: 100 ( in Pakistan it is the same as in UK , 105: 100) . A reason why Pakistan has a near normal ratio is because the Islamic religion does not permit female infanticide ( whereas Hindu religion is not clear on this )
Islamic religion does not permit female infanticide but according to northern version of Pakistani Islam it can permit to do heinous crime against humanity and if u want any prove open a news channel on TV right now and probably you will see it and for ur freaking stats India is the six largest economy with the biggest democracy. Try not to create differences and learn what they have achieved in 64 years and what we have achieved in 64 years. Negativity always come with a price and that is exactly what we are paying for the past 64 years it is high time we start correcting ourselves according to world we live in an in accordance with the teaching of true Islam(Which is peace) Happy malala day
@JSM: agree with you. This money goes to the christian charities in India. Not for others. Oh me GOD how shall we Indians survive without the aid.?
India needs help:
1) India has an insignificant manufacturing base . Trade deficit is USD 162bio . Without hot money coming to their stock market , India will remain an economic basket case .
2) corruption like the telecom scandal that cost India's exchequer USD 40bio , is rampant. Ease of doing business in India is worse than in Pakistan - one reason cited is the institutional corruption in India. This negative India will continue .
3) disparity between rich and poor, wedded in the casts system , will continue to be a serious problem for India. Gini coefficient in India is far worse than in Pakistan .
4) female infanticide / selective abortion is the worst in the world in India. In the future Indian men will not find ladies to marry and will get frustrated . Ratio at birth in India is 112: 100 ( in Pakistan it is the same as in UK , 105: 100) . A reason why Pakistan has a near normal ratio is because the Islamic religion does not permit female infanticide ( whereas Hindu religion is not clear on this )
5) 75 percent of Indians live below USD 2 a day , far more in Pakistan . The veneer of 'India Shinning' has already come off and more frustrated vIndians will continue to write frustrated articles/ post comments on ET
With this cut, India will be ruined.
@M. Abdul Qadeer: 70% of people in india have electricity connections at home..........i donno what funn u get exaggerating numbers.......anyways carry on,as if it bothers us........:P
Its good that UK can use its aid for more needy countries. By the way, can anyone in this forum enlighten me as to the difference between aid and charity? As far as I understand, aid comes tied up with a number of conditions and is never "free"
It was an expected move, and its not going to hurt the shining India. It has less to do with politics and more to do with India's changing role and space in the International horizon. However many of the charities and development organisations (UNICEF, Save the children, CRY etc.) which were receiving huge support from DFID/UK Govt. aid will be badly hit. Specially hit will be the health and programmes targeted for children in Orissa, Bihar and Rajasthan. Lets hope that Indian philanthropists takes over the role of resource providers!!! (and fortunately many like Azim Premji foundation etc are coming forward in big way with huge funding for these programmes).
Aid to India has been a sore point with the people in the UK for many years --- if one prefers to spend money on nukes, fighter bombers and space launches why should other people fund building your schools and toilets.
@M. Abdul Qadeer India is a land of paradoxes and contradictions. India is funding costly space programs and buying expensive french planes on one hand while on the other half of the India’s population (626 million) has no access to toilets. 2/3rd of the people have mobile phones but a little less than half of the population has no electricity connection at home>. This statement is self-contradictory because mobile phones require electricity to be charged. Oh yes, the rich life that our neighbors are living should be an envy to the whole world! Of course, we beg and receive aid from every Tom, Dick and Harry of the world, but, that is the duty of the kaffirs to provide us with aid, after all, we are the land of the pure!! How come that Indians are competing us in our exclusive domain, i.e the begging? And yes, after eating the begged bread to our hearts content, it is our duty to remind the wretched Indians of their miseries. PS: The bread made by the kaffirs is delicious indeed!!
@Khan: Khan Saheb, what planet are you living on? British aid was not cut "in protest" (as you wrongly cite) but because Britain perceived that India does not need -- or even care -- for any foreign aid if it can organize a multi-billion dollar Mars programme. By renouncing foreign aid, which was also controversial and reluctantly accepted in the past, India has demonstrated a greater leeway and independence from the traditional donour countries. It just reminded me that nearly a year ago, India handed over a cheque for $ 20 million to Pakistan (through UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon) to help Pakistan tide over the desperately-needed cash assistance to look after the victims of its massive flooding. You may like to criticize but Indians and the rest of the world see you in a different light. Without trying to rub salt into your wounds, it does not help to find negativity in others when your own house is not clean. You like to blame others for your problems, but also cannot bear the thought of seeing India prosper and grow. It's what a psychiatrist would say, a "schizophrenic's inferiority complex".
Wrong reporting by ET. The reason behind this curb is neither India's so called 'changing position' nor the French warplane contract. The aid was stopped by British parliament as a protest when India announced its Mars mission for 2013 a few months back. India's position at grass-root level hasn't much changed. It stills houses 55% of the world's poor.
Speaks volumes on the growth of India and its emergence as a developing super power.. A great and well deserve shift on how world looks at India with respect. On the other hand, we see our leaders begging USA, EU for more aid and begging India to please support us to bend WTO rules. We shamefully sell our motherland and our national assets to the chinese who are using us as a colony. The difference between India and us is so obvious today.
“It’s time to recognise India’s changing place in the world.”
cut Indian aid , give it to Syria or Afghanistan. We don't need ur aid
cut india's aid and send it to afghanistan......it will really be helpful in addition to the 2 billion dollar aid we provide them....................
