QUETTA: Unknown gunmen on Tuesday killed a polio vaccinator in Quetta, highlighting resistance to the country’s immunisation campaign, officials said.

The shooting happened in the Killi Jeo area of the provincial capital a day after a three-day campaign kicked off across the country, senior government official Tariq Mengal told AFP.

Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, is plagued by sectarian violence between the Shia and Sunni community, as well as by Taliban attacks and a separatist insurgency.

The Taliban have banned immunisations in some areas, condemning the campaign as a cover for espionage since a Pakistani doctor was jailed after helping the CIA track down al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden using a hepatitis vaccination programme.

In Tuesday’s incident, a team of male and female vaccinators was engaged in a door-to-door campaign to administer polio drops to children below five years of age when unknown gunmen on a motorbike shot dead a male volunteer, Mengal said.

“We are investigating if the dead man had any dispute with the attackers or the shooting was carried out by opponents of the campaign,” he said.

The campaign has been suspended in several areas of Quetta as the shooting sparked fear among the vaccinators, he said.

“We will assess the security situation before resuming the campaign on Wednesday,” he added.

Killi Jeo is home to thousands of Afghan refugees and local tribesmen.

Pakistan is one of only three countries where the highly infectious crippling disease remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria.

There have been 30 confirmed cases of polio in Pakistan this year according to the government, 22 of them in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

People should go to the polio designated branches to get the polio drops for the children instead of polio vaccinator’s should go to the people.

Regret that some terrorists are keeping away polio vaccines from the children.

Terrorists are playing with the lives of innocent children not to talk about people helping the little ones. And we have hypocrites, and opportunists like PTI, PML-N, and JI, which thrive in anarchy. They would continue to blame this killing on drones too.

I really cannot believe things coming from Pakistan now. First innocent children who want to study and educated themselves to the selfless people who save lives of children who are in danger of life threatening diseases, these manimals spare no one. Shame on them! and bigger shame on the people who live under the facade of civilized behaviour and education but condone such acts!

it is essential to vaccinate all children under five years but some people don’t know the importance and they don’t care regarding such kind of vaccination for their children health. so it impossible that every people will come in polio designated branches.

proves the malala episode has not made any difference.
how do you plan on educating if kids are sick?
instead of marches and media coverage some change in social attitude would be nice.

This is truly sad and bad news. A good and noble effort was lost to the evil minds of uncivilized persons. This is a dreadful situation and we have to keep our socks pulled up and continue the good work with better security.
May Allah rest the departed soul in Jannatul Firdous. Ameen

Takes a real coward to attack a health care worker giving polio drops to kids or attacking an unarmed little girl – all of these foreign funded criminals and agents need to be locked up but they won’t dent the resolve of citizens in Pakistan.

Umar ibn al-Khattab is said to have ordered the destruction of the library in Alexandria as none of the books seemed to agree with Islam. Apparently the books sufficient to warm the water in the bath houses for a few weeks.
And in that context, there was no polio vaccination mentioned in Holy Qur’an either.

Quetta is the capital of Balochistan . Where people of different area,s are inhabitants. The polio campaign was launched to eliminate the polio disease ,as the same disease has spoiled thousands of humen lives in the world. We must have co operated with the polio vaccinating team to eliminate the such disease , to protect out future , but the result become negative by killing the volunteers . i can not understand the mentality of such killers, why they are doing so. what is their object ? i know some foreign hands may be involved in such incidents , sorry to say they are misusing Muslims to kill Muslims. The word Muslim is the Arabic Word , Which means perfection. A Muslim who was the symbol of peace ! individuals how spoiled a Muslim personality? on the day of judgment shall we feel proud to say ourselves Muslims by doing such acts. please think about it .Recommend
