Futile advertising campaign

Letter September 28, 2012
The advertising campaign by Sindh government cannot hide the bad performance of the government.

KARACHI: The Sindh government is trying to enhance the image of its performance of the last four and a half years through an advertising campaign on electronic media and for this purpose, services of some artists, singers, businessmen and social workers have been hired. This campaign, however, has proved to be counterproductive.

The people of Sindh know very well that the coalition government led by the PPP has miserably failed to provide them with good governance. To be honest, I found the present government the worst of the lot to have ruled the province in recent times due to the poor governance and the menace of targeted killings, which have become a part of life for Karachiites. Inflation, corruption, mismanagement and the deteriorating law and order situation in the province have reached new heights.

The advertising campaign cannot hide the bad performance of the government. For example, I have seen an advertisement on TV in which Dr Huma Mir appeared and claimed that the Sindh government has provided clean drinking water in all far-flung areas of Sindh. This is a blatant lie. The overwhelming majority of people (about 95 per cent) are in trouble for the last many years due to the unavailability of clean drinking water. The 2.6 million people who reside in the area between downstream Kotri and the Arabian Sea are dying of hunger and thirst as pointed out by Speaker of the Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro some time back.

It is time that the Sindh government stopped trying to fool the people and wasting the taxpayers’ money in futile advertising campaigns. I also beseech all the renowned personalities who have appeared in this campaign to desist from doing anything similar in the future as this is bound to harm their reputation in the eyes of the people.
