WASHINGTON: Using marijuana could have really damaging consequences as it causes testicular cancer, for instance, which only gets worse with time, a study says.
The University of Southern California (USC) findings suggest the potential cancer-causing effects of marijuana on testicular cells should be considered not only in personal decisions regarding recreational drug use, but also when marijuana and its derivatives are used for therapeutic purposes in young male patients.
Victoria Cortessis, assistant professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, and her colleagues looked at the self-reported history of recreational drug use in 163 young men diagnosed with testicular cancer.
It was then compared with that of 292 healthy men of the same age and race/ethnicity, the journal CANCER reports.
"We do not know what marijuana triggers in the testis that may lead to carcinogenesis, although we speculate that it may be acting through the endocannabinoid system -- the cellular network that responds to the active ingredient in marijuana -- since this system has been shown to be important in the formation of sperm," said Cortessis, according to a statement from USC.
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men aged between 15 and 45 years. The malignancy is becoming more common, which researchers are linking with increasing exposure to unrecognised environmental causes, USC said.
The investigators found that men with a history of using marijuana were twice as likely to have subtypes of testicular cancer called non-seminoma and mixed germ cell tumours.

I disagree with the title as it has been already made clear that there is no correlation between the two. But this thing looks solid: The higher you go the cooler it becomes and the cooler it becomes the higher you go. Its like a circular motion!
The Tribune cherry picked the results of this study. If you read the study, you will note :
" Risk was decreased for more frequent users, nonsignificant for those who used for over ten years or continued to use, and more than doubled for those who used to smoke, but no longer do. "
So the moral of the story is that if you use marijuana, use it for over ten years and don't stop.
Also the study showed that marijuana users that were also cocaine users had no additional risk for cancer.
The results of the study don't make sense.

"Marijuana causes testicular cancer" This is a misleading title, and reveals the inherent bias of the author, this is one preliminary study which found a correlation between marijuana and TGCTs, however as anyone who knows anything about science knows correlation does not equal causation; in other words, simply because it has been shown that individuals with testicular cancer we're more likely to smoke marijuana does not prove marijuana was the cause of the cancer, it may just be that certain characteristics of that demographic make them more likely to smoke marijuana, but this does not neccesarily mean marijuana had anything to do with their development of cancer. As far as I'm aware this is the first study of it's kind, and should not be given much weight in the consideration of the true effects of marijuana, as these results are only preliminary, and until there is a large body of peer-reviewed evidence in allignment with it, the results of this study should be view as just that: the results of a study.
