KHAR: Twenty militants were killed and another 10 wounded when security forces and a peace militia fought marauding insurgents for a third day in a row in Bajaur Agency.

Militants had crossed over from northeastern Afghanistan on Friday and attacked the Batwar area of Salarzai Tehsil, 60 kilometres northwest of Khar, the headquarters of Bajaur Agency.

Political administration official Niaz Amin Khan and sources in the Salarzai peace militia told the media that artillery, rocket-propelled grenades and helicopter gunships were used against the militants.

Several hideouts of militant in the area were destroyed in the blitz, said Khan. He added that the joint operation would continue to flush out militants from the area.

Following last Friday’s attack, more than one hundred families have migrated from the village. Security forces have set up a checkpoint in the area, while the Salarzai militia has starting patrolling to ensure security.
