Punjab police suspends 250 ‘pot-bellied’ officials from operational duty

LAHORE: The Punjab police force has suspended around 250 officials on failure to reduce their weight, Express News reported on Saturday.

Inspector General (IG) Punjab Habibur Rehman had ordered 175,000 personnel not to allow their waistlines to exceed 38 inches and reduce their weight by July 7. As the deadline passed, those unable to reduce their waists were suspended from their operational duties.

Officials who were able to reduce their waists by 2-4 inches were, however, given an extension in the deadline.

Police sources say new young officials may be recruited to cover up for those suspended.

Teams under the supervision of district police officers were set up across Punjab to measure police officers’ waists.

    In my city alone still there are many who did not lost a single inch and since they have relations so in this Pak country they are not suspended and still performing their duties. Out of 175,000 only 250 have been been made scapegoats.

    Its a stupid order. What matters is Body Mass Index and not just waist!!! If someone is 5ft-6inches tall, 38 inches is definitely v fat and if height is 6ft-2 inches, 38 may be right. However not a bad start and one cant expect higher sophistication than 38 inches, in the first step, from head of Punjab Poolas (emphasis Punjabi accent)!!!

    @Dr Farheen Niazi: Dr Niazi if people of Punjab are giving respect to Imran khan niazi then dont be so arrogant and dont try to malign Punjabi accent or our ability to think on the behest of Punjab Police. We are proud of our accent and i love Punjabi and Urdu does not have any importance for me and many so called intelligent niazis and others work under me and i know how good they are.

    This “pot-bellied” criteria should be also applied to other Government Servants and particularly to the Politcians.

    I being a Sindhi, would have loved your statement had it not taken potshots on other languages. You should respect all other languages. Not asking you to love, but respect. Even if you do not, trust me, we, the liberals, do not care. Just for your sake I am advising you this.

    @Sameer Awan:
    I think Doctor Sahiba mentioned it on a light note. We Pakistanis all love all ethnicities and every ethnicity has a unique style (I am Punjabi myself). On the other side, claiming that people of a certain ethnicity work under you and therefore are lesser than you gives off an impolite impression.

    Why not suspend corrupt, and rishwati police officers? What does belly size have to do with being a good policeman?

    Instead of firing they should be accomodated to non operational duties and also their medical exam be conducted to determine any illness. But policeman should be fit and active.

    What a joke! Can these people please focus on issues that REALLY matter such a corruption in the police department for instance. Being physically fit is a good thing but it is a matter of personal choice and should not be forced upon. Besides belly-fat develops over time and is very difficult to get rid of once the person gets older in a short period of time…..Furthermore older policeman would not only be suspended for something which they cannot get rid of overnight, they would also have lesser career options and more children to feed.

    @Falcon: Well it was a fit of emotion and if hurt any sentiment then i am sorry. Actually i know my life and i know how i excelled and i have seen that sometimes my fellow villagers were mocked by city dwellers for their accent and obviously my statement was more emotional than rational and doctor sahiba’s comment was another statement of mockery of my people. My family was wiped out in 1947 for this country where we are now named Paindo and now we are made fun of…………

    @Sameer Awan:
    Paindo is a mentality and not an ethnicity. I agree with Falcon that you jumped to the conclusion before fully reading what the good doctor has said. One also need to control their emotions (good or bad), as things sometimes go too far.
    You are an Awan and your family was wiped out in 1947? I always thought Awans are only in the western districts of Punjab which became part of Pakistan. So where and how your family was wiped out? I am afraid you are trying to get some emotional support here. Just relax.

    Pot bellied or not – I don’t care for these gimmicks. Are they doing what they are being paid for? How about suspend or fire them for not catching criminals, demanding bribes and harassing the innocent and victims?

    Well guys – I am Pathan racially, settled (domiciled) in Punjab and equally proud of both identities whilst being respectful to all other ethnicities who make my beloved Pakistan. The expression (Poolas) was used to humour-ize a bit in a lighter way (the way we pronounce it in Punjab) and no offence or disrespect to anyone intended !!! BMI is the point however.
