ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the full court agreed to take action under the contempt of court law on Friday against those responsible behind a ‘planted’ TV show aired on Dunya TV on Wednesday.
The meeting, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, also reviewed on-air and off-air footage of the show submitted by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).
A video had been uploaded on the video sharing social networking site YouTube on Thursday which had sent shockwaves throughout the media world. It showed an interview of business tycoon Malik Riaz jointly conducted by Dunya TV anchorpersons Meher Bokhari and Mubashir Lucman appeared to be completely scripted.
The anchors not only told their guest the questions beforehand, but also discussed the answers to those questions, at times even suggesting appropriate answers.
The chief justice had summoned all the judges of all registries to attend the 3pm meeting on Friday to discuss progress on rules of working committee, registration of advocates of record and fixation of cases.
However, outside the meeting it was widely believed that the meeting was being held in context of the Dr Arsalan Iftikhar financial misappropriations case and allegations monies had been exchanged to influence court cases against Riaz pending before the courts. But during the meeting, the chief justice took notice of the TV show and summoned its footage and script.
The on-air and off-air clips submitted by Pemra were viewed inside the courtroom in the presence of Pemra chairman.
The chief justice asked the Pemra chairman as to what they could do in order to stop such contemptuous programmes. The Pemra chairman replied that if the court takes a decision, then Pemra can initiate proceedings according to the law.
After the videos were reviewed, the Supreme Court registrar read out a note which stated that the anchors questioned Riaz according to the latter’s wish and the instructions passed on by the channel administration can also be seen in the leaked video.
The full court session also ordered the Pemra chairman to submit a comprehensive report on the issue.
The Supreme Court also constituted a two-member bench to investigate the matter.
Riaz was given questions and pre-prepared answers before the show began and Abdul Qadir Gilani’s call during the show also indicated that the show was planted, added the registrar.
According to the note, a conspiracy to defame the judiciary was being hatched in the show, and an attempt to make a mockery of the judiciary and the judges was also observed in the leaked video.
The video, titled ‘Malik Riaz Planted Interview with Mehar Bukhari and Mubashir Lukman on Dunya’ had been uploaded by a user named ‘ivestigativereporter’, showed the supposed off-air conversations between the hosts and the real estate tycoon during a two-hour exclusive show.

I think when the five Pakistani cricketers took bribe for spot fixing, they were just acting involuntarily as per the aspirations of their elite countrymen and women!, and should be pardoned now for their act at least in Pakistan. They are innocent victims of the larger system they live in. Most probably same anchors punished these players during their media trail at that time.

These juornalists and TV achors are supposed to be removed from their respective offices by the owners of the Newspapers as well as by the owners of TV channels and new faces should be introduced, who are real professionals, and not the blackmailers.
Like any other corrput government officials, they have accumulated illegal wealth by blackmailing the people which should be confiscated by the courts.

Benazir Bhutto coined the term “Lifafa Journalists” more than 20 years ago. Back then, these lifafa journalists were paid to savage opponents and praise themselves. Same is going on today. Now the shift is towards electronic media and anchors.
How else can a journo residing previously in a 5-marla house in Lalu khayt buy a 2000 sq yard house in Islamabad or a house in Dubai? Certainly not on their salary.

I think you hit right at the head of the problem. People talk about corruption as if we have started adding water to the milk and fake lifesaving drugs only recently. Most of the interviews are arranged and the questions are not new and already conveyed. It is a standard practice and nothing new or surprising. On top of it we keep talking if “only CJ is restored, if only IK comes to power” all our problems would be solved. We do not want to improve ourselves and wish a God sent person with a magic wand would change us. We are more interested in a memo or interview and try to make it more than it is worth.

Then Media Financing laws (Wage baord law etc)that media dependent on Political financing should be looked into (Ads according to industry figures only over 50% of cost). More troubling is direct foreign fianancing of media outlets. Also guidelines for Privacy of citizenry in new reports and fact check should be instituted. Maybe legislation against will full and blatant defamation without adequete proof maybe required. Also using government/political machinery to shut of cable services orf threaten journalist or Burn Newspapers should be made offences.
PBA, PFUJ , owners of media houses need to step forward now to regulate behaviour. This current cycle of scape goatting and schadenfreude is self defeating.

So a leaked You-tube video can serve as evidence in this court but sworn testomony of David Headley and Ajmal Kasab, the hate speeches televised on Pakistan TV channles and the live video coverage of the 26/11 carnage where Kasab was clearly visible are not adequate proof.

why are we all jumping? Media around the world is not “FREE”, most of them work on some agendas, some media persons are actually on payrol of politicians, businessmen or a foriegn agencies. The silver lining in this case is that there still are few ppl in Pakistan for whom morality and principles are above any monetary value ….
