FAISALABAD:

The Education Department on Tuesday cancelled registration of 148 private schools in the district for not closing for summer vacations in violation of the government’s directive for summer vacations from June 1.

Executive District Officer (Education) Imran Sohaib confirmed cancelling the registration.

He told The Express Tribune that the Education Department had last month issued a circular to all schools directing them to close for summer vacations from June 1. He said some private schools had violated the order. He said special teams conducted surprise visits at the schools in the district on Tuesday and found 148 were still open.

Some of them, he said, were continuing their academic activities in the name of summer camps. He said summer camps could be allowed for fifth and eighth class students only.

The Private Schools Owners Association (PSOA) condemned the Education Deparemnt and called the action “unfair”.

PSOA Central Secretary General Rana Muhammad Tahir told The Tribune that the Education Department had given the schools a 24-hour notice to close down the schools.

“School administrations had to collect tuition and other charges for summer vacations and assign students home work. All this cannot be done in 24 hours,” he said.

He said the Education Department should consider that the private schools made a huge contribution to the education sector.

He said if the registration of these schools was not restored within a week, the Association will take to streets.
