PESHAWAR: Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, sentenced to 33 years for treason after being recruited by the CIA to help find Osama bin Laden is in poor health, a jail official told AFP on Thursday.
“His health condition is bad, a team of doctors will examine him in jail today,” Samad Khan told AFP from the central prison in the northwestern city of Peshawar, where officials have said Afridi is being held.
“He has been kept away from other prisoners to avert any danger to his life,” Khan said, without elaborating further on Afridi’s condition.
On Wednesday, officials announced that the surgeon had been convicted and jailed for 33 years under the archaic tribal justice system that has governed Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt since British colonial rule.
A court operating under the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR), which date back to the 19th century, found him guilty of waging war against the state.
Afridi comes from Khyber, one of the seven districts that make up the tribal belt.
But critics said he should not have been tried under tribal law for an alleged crime that took place outside tribal jurisdiction, in the town of Abbottabad where he ran a fake vaccination programme designed to collect Bin Laden family DNA.
A senior official in Khyber, Nasir Khan, defended Afridi’s trial.
“We have powers to try a resident of FATA under the FCR enforced in tribal areas,” he told AFP.

The man appears to be in poor moral health. He would have been appreciated if his activities were limited to search of OBL. He was involved in various espionage activities which would have compromised the defence of the country. He was a go between TTP and foreign agencies. He was funding TTP for war against Pakistan.

Who was protecting BL? Government of Pakistan? If yes than you can try Afridi for treason and waging war against Pakistan.. But Government of Pakistan was not protecting BL. Than no crime has been committed, BL was fugative and wanted for murder of more than 2 thousand people in New York. There was bounty of 40 Million dollars , He was not Pakistani he was Saudi running away from Law. On one side we say that we are fighting terrorists on other side some one helps to catch a terrorist we send him to 30 years Prison .

i think he should have been given Sitara e Jurat instead of punishment. What he did will help in the saving life of thousands in Pakistan, Afghanistan as it will bring war on terror to closer end. No, smart guy, he wasn’t. He was also given the option to leave but was concerned about the rest of his Pakistani family who more likely than not have been there for a couple generations.
That’s not something your government would pass over the chance of at least saying once or twice. Instead they chose to alienate themselves globally one more time.

From a humble background he rose to become the agency’s top surgeon, but he also clashed with authorities and colleagues. In 2010 he was suspended for six months for allegedly performing unnecessary operations in order to earn extra money. A nurse accused him of sexual harassment.
