ANP chief's sister escapes attempt on life

PESHAWAR: The sister of ANP Chief Asfandyar Wali escaped a murder attempt in Peshawar on Monday.

According to reports, attackers fired shots at the ANP Chief's sister when she left her clinic. She sustained bullet injuries on her hand and has been shifted to the hospital.

It makes me wonder: 1) Does someone want us think that the party cannot protect its own? 2) Is someone blackmailing the ANP? 3) Why attack innocent relatives and not leaders - who would do something like this? 4) Are there divisions within the party? 5) Is this a new trend - are terrorists going to hit out at leaders by attacking their loved ones? What a shameful disgusting business. To attack a doctor at a time when thousand are in KP are in desperate need of medical care. Could there possibly be any moral or political justification?

I can bet my bottom dollar that some one in our government (probably in the army) knows who these people are and what their gameplan is. After all, these people did not just appear out of the blue-they were trained and financed by someone. . The problem is that once you let such people loose, they become a self-perpetuating phenomenon, especially in societies such as ours where the conditions are ripe for them. It seems to me that there is a deliberate attempt at confusing the minds of the people who are the victims of these crimes. There are no clear lines to differentiate between friend and foe, and so you never know where the next shot is going to come from. Those who are perpetuating these crimes in the name of state interests may be doing a greater disservice to the state than they realise. It may be extremely difficult to get rid of these extremists, if at all, once the desired ends are achieved. These people know no limits and are willing to break all rules that a society lives by to make it functional. The condemnable attack on Dr. Gul Lalai is proof of the chaotic times that we now live in, where anyone and everyone has now become a target. If things continue the way they are going, we will soon have another Somalia in place of Pakistan.
