Accountability needed

Letter April 25, 2012
Where has the $1.2 billion, allotted by World Bank last year, gone? Citizens have a right to this information.

KARACHI: This is with reference to the news item “World Bank allocates $1.8b for Pakistan this year” (April 23). The fact that the World Bank has allocated money for the energy and water sectors is seemingly a beacon of hope for these sectors.

However, the problem we face is not the lack of money as simply injecting money into the economy will not solve our problems. What we need is a transparent system — an assurance that the money is spent on the purpose it was meant to be spent for. Where has the $1.2 billion, which was allotted by the World Bank last year, gone? The citizens of Pakistan have a right to this information.

I sincerely hope that a system of accountability is set up because we are already treading in deep waters. Unless some action is taken by the government, it may be too late for us to be saved.
