Inadequate shuttles at Karachi University

Letter April 25, 2012
Currently, there are 27 shuttles catering to the needs of 26,000 students and staff members.

KARACHI: University shuttle services are meant to facilitate students and are supposed to be safe and punctual. However, riding the shuttles of the Karachi University pose a challenge to all the students and non-teaching staff using them.

Currently, there are 27 shuttles catering to the needs of 26,000 students and staff members, which means that there is one bus to accommodate over 1,000 people. Students dependent upon the shuttles face severe problems in reaching the university due to the shortage of shuttles. This shortage has led to dangerous overcrowding and there have been instances of students being killed or seriously injured after falling off the buses.

The university needs to arrange for at least 50 more buses to facilitate the students and ensure their safety and punctuality. The authorities concerned must take immediate action to save students from fatal accidents.
