Resolving Siachen

Letter April 20, 2012
As an Indian, I would want Indian army to withdraw only after Pakistan authenticates the current positions.

NEW DELHI: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article “Kudos and comparisons” (April 20). As an Indian, I would want the Indian army to withdraw from Siachen only after Pakistan authenticates the current positions and marks them on the map, making an international border. India does not have any intention of taking even an inch of Pakistan’s land, but at the same time we will not cede an inch of our own territory. If Pakistan is ready to authenticate the current troop positions, I think we can resolve this dispute in no time. However, if Pakistan expects India to withdraw its troops before that is done, then I am afraid the Siachen dispute cannot be resolved.

The ball is in Pakistan’s court. Is Pakistan ready to authenticate current troop positions and turn it into an international border?
