Bannu jailbreak incident

Letter April 19, 2012
Government should allocate resources to various law-enforcement agencies based on the threats that the people face

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Ejaz Haider’s article “Bannu offers no surprises” (April 18). It is now high time that the government makes a realistic allocation of resources to various law-enforcement agencies based on the many threats that the state and the people face. One cannot blame the Bannu jail’s security system for failing to defend the prison because the personnel there did not have the required training, equipment and intelligence to fight a force like the Taliban.

Threat to a state can be broadly categorised as internal and external. Since 1947, we have been investing too much into safeguarding ourselves against external threats, whereas our major concern should be the internal threats we face. The internal threat today has become formidable and if the government still fails to assess it correctly, such incidents will keep occurring.
