Solving Siachen

Letter April 17, 2012
The Siachen issue can be solved very simply and effectively by both the sides within a few months.

KARACHI: For a change our parliament — that body of persons whose achievements can essentially be summed up as being related to their privileges and the occasional public breach thereof — has shown concern about the methods that our military has employed in maintaining a battlefield where the weather has killed more soldiers than the perpetual war with our dearest enemy. We are now at the point where more people are martyred daily by the enemy within than by combat with that ultimate enemy of 65 years.

The Siachen issue can be solved very simply and effectively by both the sides within a few months. All that it requires is that we send around 40-odd gentlemen, including Messrs Fazlur Rehman, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Hafiz Saeed, Muhammad Ahmed Ludhianvi, Hamid Gul, Ejazul Haq, etc, along with their handlers and vociferous supporters that constitute the Difa-e-Pakistan Council to Siachen. Likewise, the Indians should pressgang their pundits, like Bal Thackeray, Lal Krishna Advani, Narendra Modi and their handlers into a term of duty there.

Within a few months and with God and the weather’s help, I suspect we will be able to solve a lot of our mutual problems. Our nations’ borders will be safe and both countries will be able to promote international tourism to the world’s highest, relatively accessible, and soon to be UNESCO-declared world heritage site.
