Hand Hafiz Saeed to the US

Letter April 08, 2012
Use the $10 million to help find a solution to ending the country’s acute energy crisis.

PIMS, ISLAMABAD: I would advise the Pakistani government to immediately hand over Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed to the US and use the $10 million to help find a solution to ending the country’s acute energy crisis. After all, the welfare of 180 million Pakistanis should mean more than that of one individual, who has been roundly accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

Merely changing the name of the Lashkar-e-Taiba to the JuD doesn’t mean that the nature of the organisation’s activities has changed. The government should also explain why the JuD chief is given so much protocol when he travels across the country. We don’t want to be seen doing nothing because what if, a few months on, the US asks Pakistan to — again — choose.
