Strengthening institutions

Letter March 29, 2012
I think as a nascent democracy, Pakistan will take time before its institutions can mature and develop.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to S Aman Rana’s article “Tyranny of the majority” (March 29). I am in complete agreement with the writer’s views about the need for civil service institutions to be strengthened so that individuals do not seek security networks to protect themselves against threats, persuasions, temptations and inducements from the political class. I think as a nascent democracy, Pakistan will take time before its institutions can mature and develop.

However, I believe we are moving in the right direction as the people of the country now have access to information because of the media exposing the doings of the influential classes and how they manipulate those in the civil service. The bureaucracy must not be allowed to be held hostage by these influential people. Its independence and impartiality has to be maintained — and it must be rescued from the state it is in right now — through institutional support.
