HEC releases Pakistan's top universities lists
Quaid-e-Azam University tops overall list, AKU comes in at 3, LUMS at number 10.
HEC releases its first ever ranking of all the 136 public and private universities in Pakistan.
LAHORE: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Thursday revealed the first-ever national academic ranking of universities, with Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad leading and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) landing at the 10th position in the overall list.
The ranking model has been developed by HEC’s Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) through stakeholder participation.
The ranking is based on the number of students, research productivity and quality, innovation and knowledge transfer, infrastructure, annual graduate output, international collaborations, student satisfaction and financial health of the institution.
The overall ranking is as follows:

The rankings of IT-related Universities seem very flawed. Ranking of Engineering Universities seem okay.

@Mohammad: Indeed….Funny, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (no offense to Faisalabadis as i am from there as well) ranks higher then NUST and LUMS. HEC’s weighting mechanism seems to have over rating to the factors like number of course taught, faculties (horizontal scale) rather then rating universities in core competency and specialist area (vertical quality metric).

Hi every one i have nt seen the list of the universities ranking in Pakistan and either i do not know about the ranking of university of Peshawar, but as i have i studied in Coventry UK I personaly realised that in our universities education system there is no criticle evaluation, and with out this there is no reseach at all.so i believe that the respective govt and the concern authorites will give full attention to this side of education in our country.

I am a proud graduate of both NCBAE and LUMS as i did my bachelors and masters from both institutions respectively and both of these places are fascinating. Those who are whining about LSE not being in the list should know that NCBAE is older than LSE and does more research than LSE. Only LUMS in Lahore conducts more research than NCBAE whereas LSE for all i know have not even come up with any PhD so far so why should HEC rank it higher ? Also check LSE of today and you will notice that most of the students who are in their bachelors degree are from elite class who in my opinion are not even productive, let alone conducting research which by the way is more of a perquisite for a PhD so LSE’ites should not whine like kids and accept that NCBAE is better. The only way LSE is considered ‘good’ is because they take a lot of money from these elitists who pay to study there but also because of campus. Even NCBAE will have a big campus in future, in a year or two.

QAU on top! there should be no doubts about! Most of the LUMS faculty are either QAU graduates or QAU faculty (on-leave). I am a graduate of QAU and went to highest ranking schools in UK and US. I must admit QAU faculty is equally good.

I am happy to find a very good job in auto sector purely on merit just because I am from IoBM…I really dont care whether it is ranked or not…point to think is whether the employers thinks a university is good or not. Have you seen LUMS graduate placements in foreign universities? And that too in the top schools oversees. Have you seen the admission acceptance rate at LUMS. The quality of students is miles ahead of the rest.There is no comparison. Let’s get serious and give credit where it is due. LUMS is by far the premier university in the country..

It is unfortunate that HEC by making such ranking is losing its credibility and dignity. That’s dangerous as they are there to judge educational system’s functionality and provide feedback along with instructions to improve an institution. Educational institutes put their best effort to get recognition by HEC and use it as a tool to attract more students that according to definition of governing body is wrong practice as an institute should only be able to establish if it comes under governing body’s legislation.
It’s sad seeing not even a single component of the system is functioning in right order in Pakistan and I started losing hope entirely for even a little improvement.

Because I am an ACCA, I never had a chance to go to any university and my view points are very neutral. NCBAE, seriously? The faculty of NCBAE agrees to the fact that they have the lowest standard when it comes to the curriculum. No UET, Lahore and NED, Karachi in the engineering universities: one word; LOL. Lastly, no King Edward Medical College, Lahore and Government University College, Lahore: Either this is a lame joke played by HEC by taking the sample of most stupid and lame universities, except a few and ranking them accordingly; the least stupid and lame on top, or this is another cheap piece from ET, keeping in view the low quality, they have been depicting in their stories, lately.

In bold is QAE having total of 60 marks which are further subdivided into 18 marks for ISQA and 42 marks for TQ while the remaining 40 are for Research. So it adds up to 100 not 160…
people crying here because LUMS charged them hefty amounts in the name of this fraud that they are the best univ in pakistan…now everything is in the open..instead of whining to HEC, go to LUMS and ask for refunds before it is too late….

Actually the people giving comments here did not understand the critaria for ranking. If you look Teaching Quality has total of 42 points and Research has 40 points. Now most of the universities in Pakistan have now good faculties but they are not paying attention on Research work. Qauid-e-Azam univ is # because last year this university has more than 200 publication in good international standards Journels. Same is true with Agriculture Univ Faisalabad and Arid Univ Rawalpinid because these institutes are focusing on Research Work that’s why they are at the top….

It would be a good thing to know the basis of this list because it doesn’t add up. Why are all the government universities at the top and well reputed ones suddenly at the bottom? I think that these lists are important for people to make important decisions in their life and they should represent real rating. Lists like these is what happens when you have uneducated duds running the government and placing their pets all over the ministries.

This is a hoax. HEC compiles these lists on QEC reports which have no basis. As a matter of fact, HEC has a lot of redundant staff and it is creating some kind of justification for their retention. HEC has no way to check the actual standing of any university. At the end it will be the quality of students these universities produce.

Besides looking at the list of HEC ranking, here in Karachi still people prefer IBA first, SZABIST second and CBM third in their business professional studies. It shows clear biasness of HEC to de-list SZABIST first and to second it, then came CBM. It is a good sign for lagging universities like Iqra and IBA Sukkur pursuing towards the toppers but on the same page HEC did a very big mistake of derailing the established universities as mentioned above, it will definitely effect the lives of the innocent students who seek jobs. In my opinion truth is harder then fiction and HEC should revise the ranking procedure once again.

This listing is not a true representation of the actual ranking of the universities in Pakistan. I won’t name my university or brag about how good it is. But one thing, I’m forced to say, HEC needs to make this ranking based purely on merit and the variables involved should be published/shared with public for better understanding of its ranking methodology.

I am a GIKIan and the reason why universities like COMSATS and NUST are ranked higher than LUMS and GIKI is pretty justified. The more campuses you have across the country, the more professors you have and hence more variety and diversity of research being conducted which counts in these generalized rankings for all the departments.
I am sure that if we get down to the department rankings, GIKI can be at the top of the list for Electronic Engineering and Mechnical, and if not for Computer Sciences.

Folks who’re criticizing the rankings (mostly LUMS, IBA alumni) should ask for a refund from their respective schools if they can’t understand the basic methodology behind these rankings. LUMS, IBA, NED, etc. are schools who specialize in a certain field, hence, they’re appropriately at a comparative disadvantage in these rankings. Instead of criticizing the rankings, understand and make yourself privy to the rankings. The methodology is similar to what is used in QS World Rankings.

QAU is producing most of research graduates in social science like Pakistan studies, psychology, etc. Surprisingly, QAU name is not exist in HES own categories including Agriculture/Veterinary, Art & Design, Computer Sciences & IT, Engineering & Technology, Business Education and Medical. The worst thing about this ranking is that I know some university admission departments in Europe also look towards HEC for providing guidance in accepting students to their programs (after HEC’s foreign scholarship schemes…HEC has become quite well known over here). I have nothing against Qurtaba or Baluchistan but one can only imagine what will happen when they prefer a student of Qurtaba over LUMS for their CS programs. unfortunately this step will in the long run only favour more applications from Pakistan being rejected in favour of INDIA and CHINA. Although HEC is one of the more (semi)productive organizations in our country, but I have to say that they havent thought about the impact this ranking will have on our upcoming crop of graduates trying to get into the top tier uni’s in Europe.

I myself belong to HIGHER EDUCATION COMMISSION. And as far I know, COMSATS Islamabad have really progressed a lot in the field of Computer Science. How many of you have ever been to COMSATS Islamabad?? Well students, for your kind information, COMSATS Islamabad have produced the most number of Research Papers in the year 2011. And you know what, from the batch that graduated in 2011, 80% got jobs in and out of Pakistan. From those 8 got jobs in GOOGLE and YOU TUBE. And the remaining 20% opted for further studies..
So students, instead of being proud to be a LUMSIAN, FASTIAN, NUSTIAN, GIKIAN, or any other university, you should be a proud Pakistani.. As you’ve got somany good universities in you own country.

Comsats islamabad is rated X ( 2nd highest category) by NCEAC but number 1 on this list. That is really strange. Same for Qurtaba University who was rated Y by NCEAC.

I totally disagree with this ranking. It is quite wrong as many top universities like LUMS, NUST and FAST and some other universities are put very back in ranking. If they are not Government it doesn’t mean to put them back in ranking. They really have inspiring methodologies. HEC should ponder upon it again and give us a true ranking. Thank you

This is joke of the century. NED, KU, UET should have been included positively. Now people should realize why do Pakistan have a drain brain issue always. I totally disagree with the list ranking top 10 universities of Pakistan issued by HEC.I would like to draw the attention deficit of concerned HEC team. As Pakistan’s some of the best universities are mising in the list, like the university of Karachi,GIK and NED. which are the prominent universities contributing tremendously in the educational sector of pakistan.
the university of Karachi comprised of 58 departments provides thousands of leaders and professionals in the market every year. Although people think quality of education is not practiced in goveronment sector nevertheless University of Karachi is providing quality of education and research based studies for the students. Being a student of Karachi university I claim it’s significance, the faculty and admisnistration is sincere with their responsibilities. Next time if HEC quests for the high ranking universities of pakistan, it should be based on thorough consideration and indubious justifications.

This ranking is ridiculous… universities i have not even heard of (even after being a Pakistani citizen) in my life are ranked atop of internationally recognized universities. This ranking will definitely hurt students who have been studying at universities like LUMS, have struggled for good GPAs and end up getting outwitted by students from universities like Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University who have bloated GPAs..
I have checked the HEC website and even though the marking criteria has been mentioned, no individual assignment of marks per specific university have been specified. superficial and substandard ranking like this shows that we cannot even get something so simple right … non competency and idiocy has leached to every nook of our society..Recommend
