The dark side of cheap drugs

Letter February 09, 2012
Equally importantly, what is being done now to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again?

LAHORE: This is with reference to your editorial of February 8 titled “The dark side of cheap drugs”. You have given several worthy recommendations which, if implemented, could improve the current abysmal quality of medical care in the country, especially with regard to the dispensation and administering of medicines. The simple question that comes to mind is that what was the Punjab government doing in all of this? How did the tainted medicines make their way at one of the province’s most prestigious medical facilities, the Punjab Institute of Cardiology? Were no checks or balances in place to detect something so serious, something that would go on to cause the deaths of over 140 people?

Equally importantly, what is being done now to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again, apart from the usual blame game and the passing of the buck?
