RAWALPINDI:

A special judicial magistrate informed the trial court judge hearing the assassination case of former premier Benazir Bhutto on Saturday that three of the accused had confessed that they had helped the perpetrators and knew about the murder plot.

Magistrate Chaudhry Taufiq Ahmed, appearing as a prosecution witness, said that the accused in custody – Aitzaz Sherazi, Hasnain Gul and Rafaqat Hussain – in their recorded statements on February 2008 had confessed to helping the suicide bomber and being aware of the conspiracy.

Three other witnesses – an official of Ufone, an official of Warid Telecom and a police constable of the City police station – also recorded their statements.

Special Judge of Anti-Terrorism Court-I (ATC-I) Shahid Rafique adjourned the hearing till February 4 and issued summons for five more prosecution witnesses.

The witnesses summoned include head of the National Crisis Management Cell Brigadier Javaid Iqbal Lodhi, Rawalpindi Superintendent of Police Ishtiaq Shah, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Inspector Qamaruz Zaman, sub-inspector of the City police Zameer Ahmed and a constable, Mohsin Ali.

Separately, the trial judge put off the hearing in the application filed by Sehba Musharraf, wife of former president Pervez Musharraf, until February 11 after she did not appear in the court.
