PESHAWAR:

A policeman was killed after coming under attack from armed militants in Dera Ismail Khan. In a counter-operation, one of the attackers was also killed on Grid Road while the rest managed to escape.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Imtiaz Shah said that armed men attacked a policeman, identified as Jehangir, in DI Khan.

“One of the militants was gunned down by the rider squad which was on a routine check on the route,” Shah said, adding that a search operation was under way to apprehend the injured militants.

Immediately after the incident, police and elite forces of the police and the military cordoned off the area in and around Qurtuba School and College, where attackers were believed to be hiding.

Heavy gunfire was reported from the private college during the search operation. However, it was all to no avail since the security forces, even after conducting a room-by-room sweep, did not find the assailants.

Shah categorised the incident as ‘sectarian violence’.

Another police official told The Express Tribune that six hand grenades were found “attached to the body of the dead militant.”
