Morning show host Maya Khan fired from Samaa TV

Published: January 28, 2012

Maya Khan confirms that she has been fired from Samaa TV.

LAHORE: After an intense online campaign, television channel Samaa TV has fired morning show host Maya Khan and her team, and has said that her show will be taken off the air.

The decision comes after a controversial episode of the morning show, where Khan was seen conducting a ‘raid’ on a public park in Karachi and questioning couples about whether their parents were aware of their whereabouts and going as far as asking them about their marital status.

Maya Khan was at first reluctant talking about the decision, but later confirmed that her show had indeed been cancelled.

The morning show host blamed “a vicious media campaign by rival groups” for the outcome of the fiasco. She said that those campaigning against her had wanted her to be removed and this is exactly what had happened.

Khan stressed on the fact that no one had highlighted the “good things” she had done on her show.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, she confirmed the authenticity of the letter (below) by senior Samaa TV management and her termination from the channel.

Independent sources from Samaa have also confirmed that Maya Khan has been fired along with the production team of the show.

The letter, which was reportedly sent out by the management, states that Khan had refused to apologise ‘unconditionally’. It also adds that official termination notices will be sent to her on Monday morning.

The letter which says Maya Khan’s services from Samaa TV will be terminated has been circulating on social media websites and is reportedly signed by CEO Zafar Siddiqui.

Dear All

Your feedback is appreciated. As a responsible corporate citizen, Samaa TV did what was required under the circumstances. We do not and have not in the past or intend to in the future to take our viewership or reporting requirements without the seriousness that they deserve.

You would appreciate that as an organisation with a functioning management team, we had to conduct certain legal requirements over the past week and internal review processes (which are operational in nature) before procedding further.

As a result of which I can inform you:

  1. We asked Maya to apologise unconditionally which she did not.
  2. The CEO asked her to do that on Friday which she refused.

As a result of which the following will be put in place on Monday, Jan 30th.

  1. Maya and her team will receive termination notices.
  2. Her show is being stopped from Monday morning.

Our deeds and actions taken since this episode occured are there for the record and hope this will settle issues as far as the station is concerned.

A lot has been written about the race for ratings. Well, we do absolve such behaviour irrespective of ratings that the show was getting.

With best regards and thank you for your understanding.

This is exactly which was everyone demanded.I was emberrased to see that show on facebook and youtube.she deserved it.such public places are the only option for community belonging to lower socioeconomic status for making outings and to have their private time for eachother and may be they can’t afford going into fast-food outlets n hotels .Maya khan act was just to deprive this community of their right of their maternal freedom.that lady did the height of unethical act never supposed or expected from an educated an sensible woman. She must be convicted and made public apology for this breach of morally Ill behavior .samma tv must be sued too as how it is possible that such programme can go air without letting the concerned authorities proofreadings done.this is unresponsible and non profession attitude on the management of tv channel .

I have seen all those comments mentioned above but I feel every comment is entirely based on perception being created about Maya khan. she is not wrong just only for that PARK episode, she is wrong for so many things for example her show in month of October was about a fight between girl and her mother which is Extremely Personal issue, then playing with the sensitive issues of the families for cheap TRP. my questions are to those who are still have soft corner for Maya

1 why she haven’t discussed about her scandal with Ahmed Jahanzeb
2 did she ever called him on her programme
3 dating is wrong for school goings but isn’t it wrong to show live dancing with a guy on TV
4 if dancing like this is not wrong then why we do social boycotts of girls who show mujra in stage dramas.

At lost Maya is fired after a vicious media compaign by her rival media and the so called Liberals, the champions of human rights, women rights and free speech. But they Forget that Pakistan is an Isamic country and not a liberal one, created on a two nation theory and under the slogan ” Pakistan ka matlab kya LA ILAHA ILA ALLAH “.But today we had forgoten why our forefathers separated from India. They see the Western moral values as the standard , which suit the West but not an Islamic country. Onone hand the Liberals Advocate the couples doing immoral activities in Parks,Public places , net Cafes , the Pop and Rock culture , the Interest based economy and call it enlightment . On the other hand they criticise Blasphemy and Shria Laws as cruel. If u r against Islamic Laws , that are the laws given by Allah and not by the so called fundamentalist Mullahs.then u have no right to be called muslims. If Liberalism was the goal then what was the point in separation from India.

Media in EU and US have taken a lot of time to mature however given the opportunity of freedom to speech, it takes a lot of responsibility to deliver to the people across the country and the rest of the world, the truth but in the most appropriate manner with finesse. Unfortunately, during my short stay in Pakistan, I observed that Pakistan’s media requires a lot of maturity especially the way country’s image is being projected to the entire world. Loving and warm people with beautiful places to visit giving a foreigner the very taste of scenic drives through the terrains, I am grieved to hear or see such incidents.
Having said that, it’s media’s utmost responsibility to project a positive image of the country and encouraging foreigners to visit this country and depicting a good image of the most talented people of Pakistan. Terminating such irresponsible anchors and their crew would most certainly set a good example who grab their cameras and microphones to invade the privacy of others by crossing the moral boundaries in the name of piousness and justice.

Thank you and with regards from Germany.

Maya Khan got exactly what she deserved. I am glad everyone took a stand. Indeed an example for all the anchors. They should know the consequences of irresponsible behavior.

Those who believe we should all be working on removing incompetent politicians instead of the irresponsible media people, I agree with them to quite some extent. But this if not equally; was at least important.

If they did was socially wrong and reflected the ill moral of the society then atleast Maya khan should not expose this becouse she herself used to visits dance party Recommend

    Jan 30, 2012 - 1:31PM

Everyone has a right to privacy, what is un-ethical and immoral is a decision of Legislation and other higher authorities. There is no law in the country which is prohibiting or ristricting an unmarried couple to sit in public places, even policemen intrude such couples and irritate them and threat them inorder to take BRIBE, which should also be condemn. Its a very good move by Samaa Tv, in addition a petition should have been filed against Maya Khan for intruding and probing innocent people for no reason but for unnecessary publicity of the TV show.

    Jan 30, 2012 - 4:22PM

@usman, shan, hasnat and all those who think Samaa has done the right thing:

its a little difficult to accept that NOBODY else at Samaa TV knew abt what Maya Khan was up to, since Samaa were the ones who aired the show
and like colonel mentioned, “they r pretending that the show was aired without their knowledge”
seems more like that the channel wants to shove the dirt on one person (and her team) so that they may continue unscathed

also, firing maya khan is really not the solution here, its more abt responsible journalism that the channel decided to forego when it aired the show

All the public parks in Karachi have turned into a red light area. You can watch illegal sex and immoral activities among the youngster and among the adults for free and there is no law or enforcement agency to protect the integrity and respect of the park. Girls and boys of all ages are engaged in sex and immoral activities without any hindrance and they dont pay any charges to it. The parks have become a sex den for all the youngster and adults. You can find these similar scenes if you visit western countries where sex and immoral activities are done in open and are free. I have seen all these activities with my naked eyes and I didnt raise any question because the law enforcement agencies are a part of it. If I say anything I would be taken to task and I dont want my life to be in jeopardy.

I highly appreciate host Maya Khan and his team for their courage to bring these illegal sexual and immoral activities to the knowledge of the public but I strongly condemn the Sama Channel who have sacked her. Instead Maya Khan should have been eulogized and praised for such an effort but sorry to say people who do not support Maya Khan for her effort are shameless . You have to understand that Pakistan is a Islamic state not like the west and every citizen of Pakistan should maintain the sanctity of the state and follow the ideals of our holy prophet.

I will request to host Maya Khan not to sit and cry over her sacking instead she should approach the Supreme Court and bring the offenders to apologies and reinstate back to her job with due respect. Sama Authority should issue a public apology in this regard. Hope people from all walks of life will awake and stop these nuisance in public and save Pakistan. May Almighty help us to protect the Islamic State of Pakistan Recommend

I believe that what Maya has done was right and necessary irrespective of the way she adopted as what was happening (Dating) in the park was completely wrong in the eyes of Islam. This evil and menace has spread extremely speedily in our society and creating too many problems especially for teenagers.

In an Islamic country (although by name), no date point is is allowed and unfortunately in our country especially this is becoming so common that some of the parks (pubclic places) have been labelled as date point (if I am not wrong)

This is totally wrong that Maya was fired, this is a defeat to all those who is against injustice. She took a brave step to expose those who are spreading profanity and sex. I bet there was a pressure from top govt poiticians to fired her because their children are also involved in these park kind of activities. It is truly shame for the whole country, I hope Maya finds her way to the other channel and continue this great journey.

I totally agree with you Rizwan, parks are no longer safe place to walk, jog or to take your children for a play. What I have seen couple having sex in the park with my own eyes, and I was totally shocked and found that this kind of activity is normal in the park. I live in USA and never ever seen such an incident like this at all, Pakistan for sure is no long an islamic country (sorry to say). Salman

Its so sad…. you people want freedom, and talks about privacy. In Islam there are certain limitation for both men and women, if someone crosses that limitation they commit sin. So my point is if someone highlights bad things which is prevailing so fast through different medium (TV media, Internet, mobiles, etc) in our society, instead of correcting ourselves we point fingers on others, they are doing this n that. Why…Why… Why?????? Give me Answer you are living in a muslim country.

Excellent! This should have been done immediately but I get that these guys had to try to do damage control but obviously Maya is a no brainer when it comes to journalism and business (what an attention wh*re). I think this should be taken one step ahead and Samaa should put the managers back on probation who supposedly gave the approval on Maya and her production team’s idea of exposing private matters of citizens without their consent. This is not only because those individuals were offended but also that if these managers don’t know simple law then they could cost Samaa millions and millions of rupees.

@shaheena: Will you please explain the kinds of Social Problems for girls???? is it like their boy friends will refuse to meet because of the fear of being caught or girls will have to refrain their selves from dating so their family & parents stay unaware????
Besides any other fear, we should only have fear of Allah. Dating & such mingling of strange (unmarried) men & women is not allowed. Thats it.

    Feb 1, 2012 - 9:56PM

I learned about the hype on face book. Not aware of the show or circumstances that led to Mayas termination. Social taboo aka Dating collided with open media. There was no balance and no protection for the ones exposed. In a country where honor killing is common.
Ms Khan should pursue other means to prove her point, if she is serious about morals of society. Exposing general public against their will is not appreciated any where. Samaa TV advocates/ legal team should have analyzed the risk and consequence before launchuning this project.

  • Arsalan Khan

Its good that she has been fired, and the channel has said sorry, for what its worth. I still think we need an explanation from SAMAA TV as to how this show was even allowed to air in the first place. Samma TV needs to tighten its control over what it airs.

    Feb 2, 2012 - 11:26AM

Appreciate move by Samaa TV, this is unacceptable, such a sheer infringment on personal freedom and private life, Media has no right to interven into peoples personal life, the couples dating in parks do not hold on pubic offices, they are not accountable to media.

I saw one episode on youtube, Maya was literally running after two young people, it angered me, who is she, for that matter, what business tv channels, have with our private lives.

relieved to know that show is off air now, at least some one is there to listen the voices of the protest and anger.

I think from one side it was too bad what Maya Khan done…there was other ways how to deal with these issues…she not supposed to go there and start action herself…
i have been to those parks with my family and we never gone back there because it is too discusting to see couples hiding behind bushes and touching, massaging each other…we are going there with small kids and all this we are showing to our kids…
action has to be taken by goverment or police sources to control this…parks are for everyone not just for couples…in public places it is too bad what we are seeing there…

I have been watching maya khan show since few months, and i liked it. She was entertaining, and had a good personality. Most of her shows i have enjoyed, as she has raised good issues about the bad things happening in our society. It was a fun morning show. and enjoyed some of the real issues facing different classes of society.

However, I agree that people who didn’t want their faces shown on camera should have been respected. She is a great host/personality IMO. She did apologize on one of her shows.
