Pari Nagar

Letter January 15, 2012
Villagers from places where people procure their cultural artifacts do not know the worth of such things.

STOCKHOLM: This is with reference to Salman Rashid’s article of January 14 titled “Pari Nagar”. I have seen huge slabs of beautifully carved limestone from Makli, in the living rooms of people who have worked in Pakistan and are now living in the west.

Some of these people worked for decades for organisations like Unicef and Unesco and received fat salaries. And at times when Pakistan experiences a catastrophe or a natural disaster, they rush to Islamabad and advise the government about preservation of national heritage. The villagers from where these people procure their cultural artifacts do not know the worth of such things.
