Pakistan maintains top slot in Google search for 'sex'

Published: December 28, 2011

Narrowing the analytics for the search term to just 2011, Pakistan maintains the number one position, followed by India and Vietnam.

With over 20 million internet users and growing fast, Pakistan has managed to secure the number one slot for searching the term ‘sex’ globally for all years.

According to a 2010 Fox News report, Pakistan had outranked all countries in Google searches for pornographic terms last year. Narrowing the analytics for the search term to just 2011, Pakistan maintained the number one position, followed by India and Vietnam.

Islamabad featured in the top 10 cities worldwide to search the word ‘sex’ in September and December 2011.

Provincial capital Lahore also featured in the top 10 cities for the months of January, March, April, May, June, July, September, October, November and December 2011.

The months of February and August (Ramazan) were the only two months in 2011 that did not feature any cities from Pakistan in the global ranking.

How does Google Trends work?

Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms entered, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time.

To rank the top regions, cities, or languages, Google Trends first looks at a sample of all Google searches to determine the areas or languages from which they received the most searches for the first term. Then, for those top cities, Google Trends calculates the ratio of searches for the term coming from each city divided by total Google searches coming from the same city.

The city ranking and the bar charts alongside each city name both represent this ratio.

Google Trends uses IP address information from server logs to make a best guess about where queries originated.

Sorry but I can’t believe this. At most 10 million people have Internet in Pakistan, in no way can they compete in search terms with US/Canada.

Pakistanis are also on the top in searching word “Quran” . Islamabad,Karachi,Lahore are on the top 3 slots , and Pakistan & its 3 cities have far better figures than its 2nd and 3rd competitors (Bangladesh,Morocco) in all years category. its very sad that this nation is always ready to accept any negative criticism and even sometimes unproven allegation (andha eeeman le ate hn ) without doing any confirmation or research .

Whats wrong with searching sex… do you think all the people commenting on this forum got here in the first place…….!!! I mean instead of bashing the countries that make the most number of PORN movies…

“Google Trends calculates the ratio of searches for the term coming from each city divided by total Google searches coming FROM THE SAME CITY”.

This means that the total absolute number of searches for porn in Pakistan is not necessarily higher than the countries who have a greater number of overall searches.

India, quite obviously hits a lot more searches on Google than Pakistan and I’m assuming a much greater number of total absolute searches for Porn too (owing to their population size). However, according to Google trends, Pakistan’s search for porn/Pakistan’s total searches is higher than any other country.

There is a lot of increase in bisexual and homosexual activity among Pakistani youth. Many Pakistanis in big cities are open to experimentation with same sex pleasure and think that sexuality is very fluid. Many married men also engage in same sex activity.

People shouldn’t read too much into this.

Pakistanis are not internet savvy. Unlike other worlds where people look up exact websites, Pakistanis search with rudimentary words like ‘sex’ on Google.

Others know what phrases to use while looking for ‘sex’ on the internet or which website to go to, directly.

    @Naveed Javed:
Except for a whole load of politically-oriented jokes about Veena ‘declaring her assets’ etc. nobody in Pakistan really cared about Veena Malik. The woman’s a crazed, attention-seeking person and Pakistanis are largely tired of her antics. It was the Indian Muslim clerics who passed fatwas on her…!

  • Dec 30, 2011 - 11:10AM

Pakistan is not even in the list for years 2003, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 and 2011. And Pakistan tops with only a small margin for years 2004 & 2011.
Now how come Pakistan is on top for all years?

Well, beside all the woees and ahhhs, blaming etc.
The biggest fact is Pakistanis are only aware of the term “sex” to search for mature contents. So I guess we should admire here that we are not even aware of the terminologies used for mature contents.
Another fact from the same “google trends” the “search volume index” is much higher for civilized countries like UK etc.
So I strongly reject the accusations and ridicule on basis of the fewer facts or say obscured fact in this case.
    Long live Pakistan

It’s appreciative to know that some commentators have been diligent enough to scrutinize the facts

presented by Fox news and Google trends as inconsistent, manipulative and half truths. Kudos to the commentator who posted a link to the YouTube video. Although, I have seen others in the past with more solid arguments.

It should come as no surprise to those who are familiar with Fox News’s anti-Islam stance and vitriolic statements against Muslims in general. You see, the more you associate an individual or group of people to a sinister or perverted aspect of their nature the more revulsion the public has for them.

On it’s own searching for sex or ‘porn’, may not seem to have the ‘shock’ factor they are looking for to rile the public to demonize the Pakistanis, but to associate them with the darker niche side of porn is a tried and tested formula. This formula has been used to bring down Politicians, United Nations Ambassadors, sports stars, movie stars and pop idols who have not towed the line or danced to the the tune for the ‘powers to be’.

If Michael Jackson had slept with several women the general public’s response would be ‘at least he is human’, but when he was associated with sleeping with children, he was called ‘a monster’. The allegations co-coincided when his brother Jermaine Jackson who had become a revert to Islam had given him Michael a copy of the Qur’an to read and that he was taking a new direction to his music. I have met his brother, Jermaine.

Its a shame for the whole of our nation that we are not progressing in any other matter of life but morally corrupt activities.
Seems we have a lot of spare time for such things. It should not be taken simply as a joke or false sense of pride but this is in fact an alarming situation related to the ever growing deterioration of our society. What are we leaving for our children ??……. A morally corrupt society in the end ??
Think about it or you all be looser in history.

All of you comparing Indias population to Pakistan’s and passing judgements about Pakistanis, heres a few thoughts that may enlighten you on the truth.

First of all the rankings are calculated based on the percentage of times the word “sex”is googled as compared to the total searches from the region. So it doesnt matter if Indias population is 6 times that of Pakistan or 12 times, the rankings are based on ratios. Pakistan being 1st doesnt mean that the actual number of searches for sex was greater than that of India, it just means proportionally we google sex(as compared to other terms) more than india.

Secondly, the reason we Pakistanis are on the top of this list is not because we are perverts or peadophilies, its because of our naivete, illiteracy and innocence. Considering that 70% of our population lives in rural areas, or at least last time I checked, we are very well lacking the vocabulary to search the internet for pornography. What I’m trying to say is that whenever we try to search for porn on the internet, well above 50% of us Pakistanis will only be able to come up with the word sex. Whereas in the major part of the rest of the world, even 5 year olds will not google sex if they were looking for porn. The majority of the population will google the pornographic niche they like to watch, or even go straight to their favourite site. I think if google were to publish a ranking of all the other words in a porn directors dictionary, I think you wont be able to see Pakistans name till the very last percentile.

I hope that puts things a little more into perspective. Hopefully now people understand what these rankings actually mean.I can go on and on on this topic, but I think ive made the point I was trying to make, and in doing so discovered I rather like writing. You know what, I may even start my own blog(Obviously not a porn awareness blog)

  • Nadeem
    Dec 31, 2011 - 10:51AM

Its not possible and the reasons are quite obvious. First of all almost 50% ofthe internet users are organizational and corporate, where searching for orn is not possible or atleast very difficult. Then comes the number of institutional users like colleges, universities etc. There also, its quite difficult to search for such terms. In the end around 10-20% are home based users where a majority of childrena dnteenagers are constantly monitored by their parents. So its quite in contrast with the rest of the developed world, even India, where the internet use is quite common and not very strictly monitored.

I was just wondering if these statistics are per capita/percentage, or just a base value. I agree with what someone said…there is no way that Pakistan with 10 million internet users could be the United States.

  • Ahsan Butt
    Dec 31, 2011 - 5:55PM

I’d like to mention two points. First is the lack of education in poor countries, due to which most of the people even don’t know the long-term effects of these rubbish things.
Secondly, I’d like to see this issue in the light of my own relogion, ”ISLAM”. How can we say that our reigion allows us to see these things? Islam gives us a path according to which we can easily pass a peacefull life in the world. Now-a-days we’ve forgot all our true teachings of ”ISLAM” and it’s the main reason of our down-falling in the developing world. We ought to be faithful to our religion, otherwise we’ll always suffer.

I wish we have more insight, research and analysis on our part in media rather than beleiving everything from the west.

  • Tilopa
    Jan 4, 2012 - 10:43PM

    Don’t you understand mathematics?
Google trends works by taking the ratio of the total searches of a particular word with the overall search in a particular region.

So if in india somebody searched for a word ‘foo’ 100 times and the overall search from india was 100000 then still it will be lower then pakistan if pakistan searched for the word ‘foo’ 10 times and overall search was 20.

It means more percentage of pakistanis search for these words.
    Got the logic?

  • Vikram
    Jan 5, 2012 - 3:18AM

That just means religious Pakistanis (Muslims & Minorities) are little bit more interested in sex (porn and what not) then religious Indians (Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians). It also proves religion can’t control hormones or sexual desires which may be behind this action of search. I guess for desi women doing some thing like that is considered a sin.
