Aqib has previously enjoyed stints as Pakistan’s bowling coach as well as the team’s assistant coach under Waqar Younis, before he was removed ahead of the tour of Zimbabwe earlier in the year. He has also been involved in other coaching roles within Pakistan cricket for almost a decade now, having started at the Lahore Regional Academy, followed by stints as coach of the under-19 team, as well as the head coach at the National Cricket Academy.
He had been with the national team since 2009 and is also in the running to take over the role of the bowling coach on a permanent basis as the PCB’s coach-hunt committee is believed to be interested in hiring home-grown batting and bowling coaches.
The former fast-bowler will be part of a nine-man support staff for the series, along with Mohsin Khan who will continue as interim coach. Naveed Akram Cheema has been retained as team manager, while former batsman Ijaz Ahmed will serve as fielding coach. Colonel (retired) Waseem Ahmed will be the team’s security manager.
Pakistan play three Tests, four One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20s against England on the tour that begins on January 17.
