Documenting dying voices

Letter December 17, 2011
Even though Punjabi is being lost, efforts should be made to protect other languages which have a chance of surviving.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Zubair Torwali’s article “Documenting dying voices”, published December 16. Punjabi is a dying language for a number of reasons. Firstly, no notable newspaper is published in it, nor are any Punjabi books published, if any at all. It is necessary to keep a historical record of languages even if they die out because they show the history of a place. Thankfully, other provincial languages seem to be doing well and are spoken more. Newspapers and books are written in those particular languages as well. Even if it seems as though Punjabi is being lost, efforts should be made to protect other languages which do have a chance of surviving.
