Objections to MFN status for India

Letter November 27, 2011
If Pakistan were to revoke the MFN status to India, it would be the one to lose out.

LAHORE: This is with reference to your report of November 24 titled “India can never be a favourite for Pakistan: Jamaatud Dawa”.

Our political leaders should stand up and tell the ignorant, rabid reactionaries that granting ‘Most-Favoured Nation’ (MFN) status to India only makes for a level playing field, and that this is something we are obliged to give to India under WTO membership rules.

I am shocked that we as a nation are making such an issue out of this. How come we say nothing when our markets are swamped by Japanese, Malaysian, Korean and Chinese goods? But when it comes to be the common man getting some benefit, we raise all kinds of objections.

Common sense would dictate that India, for its own sake, needs a stable, economically-vibrant Pakistan on its borders. If Pakistan were to revoke the MFN status to India, it would be the one to lose out.
