LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) took out a large rally at the Minar-e-Pakistan ground in Lahore on Sunday.

More than 100,000 supporters gathered as a show of strength in what is traditionally the PML-N stronghold.

PTI chief Imran Khan warned politicians to declare their assets or his party would launch a civil disobedience movement against them.

Speaking on issues plaguing the country, Khan said that his party would stand with minorities and work for the rights of women.

He said PTI would also give the Baloch their rights and “not colonise them.”

PTI convener Sajjad Haider Randhawa led 700 to 800 people from the PP-170 Sangla constituency of the district. The supporters arrived in 25 vehicles – two big buses, eight cars and 15 coasters.

Muhammad Ishaq led a convoy of 13 vehicles carrying 250-300 people from PP-170 Shahkot.

No vehicles or people have arrived at the rally from PP-172 Nankana City, the constituency of sitting MPA of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Rai Shahnawaz Bhatti.

Aside from ground activity, the PTI is effectively using social media tools such as Twitter to build support for today’s rally, using the Twitter hashtag#PTIjalsa.

The PTI are also broadcasting the rally live here.

2:15pm

Express 24/7 correspondent Rabia Mehmood says approximately 5-6,000 people have gathered around Minar-i-Pakistan for the PTI rally so far.

The organisers set 2pm as the official time for the rally to kick off.

Around 1,500 policemen including 50 Elite Force personnel are to be deployed at Minar-i-Pakistan. Thirty-two walkthrough gates monitored by CCTV cameras have been installed at the venue.

The protest area has been divided into four zones, with a superintendent of police given charge of a zone each.

The Insaf Student Federation (ISF), the student wing of Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), says it expects some 7,000 students from schools in the city to join its public meeting at Minar-i-Pakistan today.

Imran, whose party has been making significant inroads as a ‘street power’ but has yet to do well in elections, is being seen by observers as at least a ‘game changer’ in coming parliamentary polls, especially in Punjab’s urban areas.

I am disappointed with the Police Reforms formula of Imran Khan. Electing SHOs from masses directly with any training and selection criteria will further politicize the police department. Police department is already immensely politicized and corrupt. It is better to give them autonomy like judiciary together with establishing an accountability plan for police.
On the other hand, eliminating Patwaris will not do any good as Patwaris perform many other duties along with record keeping. Secondly, reforming Patwaris can’t eliminate corruption from the Revenue department. Thirdly, Imran gave no formula of reforming the corruption in lower judiciary and ousting those selected on political considerations by PPP.

Sounds kind of menacing and a bit MQM-ish wouldn’t you say Mr Secretary-General? We need to vet our politicians more thoroughly before voting them into power, lest they go around “eliminating” people with different opinions. I hope Arif Alvi doesn’t represent the “democratic spirit” of PTI.

The show was very impressive. Three points which I picked up: 1. Bringing back all looted money from foreign banks.. 2. Instead of SHOs there should be Sheriffs as we see in USA who are picked up from within the consent of local people of the area. 3. Throwing away the begging bowl by using our own resources. Anyhow, now sleepless nights for PML-N and good news for PPP and its supporters for putting dent in the vote bank of Sharif brothers. Yes, Mr. Imran Khan can now expect sizable voters both from Punjab and KP. I think he is backed both by the establishment and jack boots. .

Khans first week in office will go something like this 1) America’s will reaffirm their commitment to drone attacks – probably accelerating them to make a point 2) Taliban will reaffirm it will not negotiate with Pakistan until Pakistan agrees to implement Sharia and 3) military will make it clear that it doesn’t take orders from the civilian govt. It’s easy to make promises over things that you really have no control over — Khan can’t control corruption, foreign policy, international finance, the Taliban or the American’s. Be prepared to be disappointed.

But are shows like this enough to win an election ?? Simple answer is NO and I am sure Imran and his team know this. So there is much work to be done ‘on the ground in the villages’ where the bradari system and the feudal stranglehold is strong.

To all my friends who think that Imran will divide PML-Ns vote bank and would help Zardari to stay in power is very true………BUT……This is the only way to bring a change…..What are the alternatives?….. Sahreef Bros? Mulana sahib? Zardari Sahib? JI? MQM? PML-Q? GHQ?ANP?………seriously?….come on ppl we all know they have failed. Have given multiple chances but still failed….infact they didnt even try to rectify. Now the ppl of Pakistan are looking for an alternative…enough is enough…they need a platform, which Imran khan has offered and ppl are going to use this platform. The proof lies in his rally…..no traditional ‘Karaey Kay Karkonan’…Minarey Pakistan was full of common ppl…people like you and me………Just think About it….???? He will indeed divide PML-Ns vote bank and apparently help PML-Q,MQM and PPP but thats how the transtion towards productive politics and democracy will occur. PML-N has proven to be useless repeatedly …… DO you all think that they will fix it…..NO….someone need to go first and that is how the change will evolve. We need a leadership with odometer that says..000000….and we have nobody except him and I think thats the reason he is gaining popularity. Today PPP, PML-Q and MQM are happy but once this alternate force will gain momenten the change will bring them down too…..these traditional and commercial political parties will either have to change their rules of engagement or better go home. The change will occur but will take time…for that we may have to tolerate these corrupt mercenaries for few more years….But me and millions of ppl like me have noticed a new wave…..that isn’t gona stop now. Pakistan Zindabad.

I am not the strongest supporter of Imran Khan. In-fact, I really disagree with his opinion of stopping military action against the Taliban. But it seems only fair to give him a chance. His views may not be the best but he is an honest man who has done a lot, and i mean a LOT, for Pakistan. Hopefully, he’ll mature up his views when he comes to office and hopefully we can finally move towards a better future. To those who are still unconvinced about him as our next prime minister, just compare him with the other idiots out there whom we have tried and tested many times and they have failed to do anything positive for Pakistan even once. I say go for Imran this time. Good luck Imran! Good luck Pakistan.

Pakistanis are being fooled by establishments and corrupt politicians.Imran Khan is last hope to bring real change in Pakistan. I am from Karachi but still prefer Imran Khan over Altaf Hussain. We have seen 64 years of rule by army and polticians and both failed to bring any change in Pakistan. We must wake up and give chance to Imran Khan and I am sure he is going to deliver and bring back the lost pride of Pakistan.

The world is witnessing a step towards change in Pakistan. Like myself and millions of pardesis living outside of Pakistan that call Pakistan home are seeing hope and courage by the youth, laborers, and the working class of Pakistan which are looking for change by coming to support a politicians that is unlike the rest. Finally I can say with many other Pakistanis living abroad that Alhumdulillah we are proud of Pakistanis finally standing up and demanding their rights. And in’sha Allah Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaaf can bring these changes to the brave Pakistanis wishing for a better future.

Great, impressive rally, awesome speech by IK, no doubt. But speeches and rhetorics is not the only thing that we need now. and its not the only thing that is going to bring change. IK needs to work REAL HARD before he can prove himself, and fall upto the high expectations of the people. He alone and the votes alone can do nothing. He needs workmanship. Good workmanship. And a lot more before he can compete with the other parties.
Still we are with you Imran, May God help you and may God prevent our sky-high expectations from being shattered. Amin.

Waiting for this moment to express myself on “Express”-Tribune [after a long time]:

Though his (Imran Khan’s) word are the words of many of us, though the feelings of his (imran Khan) are the feeling of many of us. But these words and feelings are very much similar to the one we have listened from the politicians in the past elections [1988,1990,1993,1997,2002,2008], like me many of us are just waiting for the detailed plan, the step-by-step approach, the terms of coalations that PTI would have, ammedments in future foriegn policy, provicial goverment structure, economic policy, law & order approach, Pak-US/Pak-Afg/Pak-Ind relationship strategies, and many other open items.

Once we have a clear depiction of all this –> Trust me the eagerness within each of us would be enough for the you(Imran Khan) to clean sweep in the next election
    .
    .
    .

Just a Caution: Don’t do the mistake that Dear Musharaf did–> beware of the seasoned politicians.
    NB:
    1. Millions of red-blooded Pakistanis like me — who are in search for a leader — are watching every step that you are taking.
    2. As per UNDP, 63~76% of the population of Pakistan is youth [the future of the Pakistan] which is much more then the vote casted in the last election 34,665,978/-.Recommend

Well I agree with all the support and backing Imran Khan is getting. I also support him and for the first time in my life I will be out there to cast my vote for Imran Khan, but I am still optimistic on few things. Faces surrounding Imran Khan are not young and fresh faces, it is alarming that the people joining PTI are the ex PPP and PMLN scapegoats with no reputation. It is the responsibility of the youth who is backing up Imran Khan to keep PTI at a distance from this dirty politics of landlords and fudels to trasnform the real cause “The change” into a reality, or else it wont be any different from what the Pakistani nation is suffering from currently. I hope Imran understands the reality and bring a true transformation of change into the blood stream of the youth of this nation and if he does so Pakistan will be a different country in no time heading to prosperity and honor.

    Dear All

Imran Khan has challenged the traditional powers in Pakistan. The people of Pakistan which are now deprived of all political parties have attended the call of Imran for dignity and transparency in the Country. He is man of principals and intend to regain the respect of Pakistan among the World Nations and to restore the parity with USA and India.

He is true believer of honesty and competitiveness in the country. It is very important to notice that 60% people of Pakistan(mostly the youth ) is now with him and consider him change agent for progress, development and accountability.Military Establishment & Judicial Establishment is backing him.Deprived communities, middle class of the country, moderate people, youth, moderate religious people and especially (52%) women of the country are trying to vote(for change) him in forthcoming elections.

Having a bunch of teenage girls screaming at rallies does not make for an election win. True support needs to come from the masses in the rural areas of Pakistan. Imran cannot run on a Punjab platform and expect to become a national leader. The PTI has no clear manifesto and Imran Khan comes across as a liberal pretending to be a mullah. He has to decide whether he wants to run on a secular platform or a right wing fundamentalist platform.

Needless to say the Establishment has been the bane of the country over the years. It has not learnt anything from all these events.
