Only 27% Pakistanis contribute to flood relief this year: Gallup poll

Less than 50% respondents to poll blame government for flood disaster.

A minority of Pakistanis contributed to flood relief in Sindh this year, with a majority saying they did not contribute at all, revealed a recently released Gilani Poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan.

In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:

Many people contribute on their own to aid the flood affectees. Have you taken any step to help them till now?

The poll results revealed that 27% personally contributed to flood relief in Sindh, 70% said that did not contribute and 2% did not answer.

Those who answered with contributing to relief efforts were asked a follow-up question:

If yes, then what kind of help?

In response to the question, 55% claimed they contributed with financial help, 29% said they helped by contributing goods and 16% said they did volunteer work.

'Floods were natural disaster'

A separate poll revealed that more than 50% of the respondents believed the floods in Sindh were a natural disaster and almost half of them said they blamed the government for the damage from the floods.

A sample of men and women were asked:

In your opinion who is responsible for the damage in Sindh due to recent floods?

Responding to the question, 45% blamed the government for the disaster in Sindh 54% considered it as a natural disaster. However, 1% did not give a view.

Divided views on government’s flood relief efforts

A third Gilani Poll reflected divided views on the government’s performance with flood relief efforts.

In the survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women were asked the following question:

What is your opinion about government’s collective performance in controlling the problems that arose due to recent rainfalls?

A majority, 43%, of the sample rated the government’s performance as poor, while 31% said it was acceptable and only 20% said it was good.

The surveys were carried out among a sample of men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country.

Error margin is estimated to be approximately +2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
