Anna Hazare’s narrow focus

Letter August 23, 2011
The fact of the matter is that the Indian government has no sincerity in cracking down on corruption.

NEW MARKET, MD, US: This is with reference to Urvashi Butalia’s article of August 23 titled “Anna Hazare’s narrow focus”. The fact of the matter is that the Indian government has no sincerity in cracking down on corruption. Government officials have had several meetings with Team Anna on the planned anti-corruption legislation but none of the latter’s suggestions were taken into consideration when the draft law was written.

Usually it is seen that unless the Supreme Court of India goads the government to take action, as it has done on the 2G Spectrum scandal or on the issue of black money, no action is taken. The result is that in the eyes of most Indians, the current government has lost much of its credibility.
