Diplomats’ movement: US pushes Pakistan to ease restrictions

Ambassador Munter meets Army chief Gen Kayani.

ISLAMABAD: The United States has launched fresh efforts to convince Pakistan’s security establishment to ease travel restrictions on its diplomats and review a decision of expelling American military trainers in the aftermath of the Abbottabad raid.

US Ambassador Cameron Munter met Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Both sides confirmed the meeting but would not divulge details.

“Those were private discussions and I am not in a position to comment on it,” said US Embassy spokesperson Alberto Rodriguez.

However, a Pakistani military official told The Express Tribune that the two “must have discussed the ongoing tension between the two countries.”

Some TV channels reported that the US envoy sought Gen Kayani’s intervention to lift restrictions imposed on the movement of US diplomats.

Pakistan recently started implementing new measures that restricted the movement of foreign diplomats and non-diplomats in the country.

The US ambassador was stopped briefly at the Islamabad airport by officials a few days back for not having a travel permit that he was supposed to have from the foreign office. The ambassador was, however, allowed to continue with his travel to Karachi.

If you are putting restrictions you should enforce them. Why was the ambassador allowed to continue his journey?

When Chief of Pakistan Army meets US Ambassador, then these discussions are not private. All discussions should be made public.

Pakistan’s foreign policy still rests with the army and the civilian administration is not at all capable enough to do something about it.

The USA should just stop processing Pakistan visa’s until Pakistan quits harassing it’s diplomats — that message will be loud and clear.

What rubbish business is the American Ambassador to meet Army Chief? Can Ambassador Hussain Haqqani or for that matter ambassador of any other country meet an Army Chief of a particular country? Can you imagine American Ambassador meeting Indian Army Chief?

Why have travel restrictions on friendly foreign missions and its employees in first place?
Perhaps the Pakistanis are worried about what else they may find in their back yard, if they are allowed to venture wherever they like!!!

@iftikhar you are right. The state is owned by its people. The government and officials are appointed by the people for specific jobs. The should not forget their status. If they are discussing something for us, we must be informed, if they are hiding …..then they are conspiring. they might be selling more bases, they might be allowing drone strikes in other areas, they may be….we can say anything.

@balma i share the same worry, why are we forced to get trainers? Does anybody know?

Why this gentleman MUNTER travelled across the country without proper documents. I know and i want everyone to know it. He wants to turn our weakness into our unability. It was our weakness that we couldn’t stop and send back American Ambassador to Islamabad travelling illegally. And he succeeded in boldly breaking our laws so that we lose the moral strength and become unable to stop even the junior employees of US embassy from doing such illegal act. Imagine the real situation, For munter the home department authorities must have contacted higher ups, they okayed his release, next time when a junior will travel like that the home department officials will be having a precedence and they will not contact higher ups, so the line has been cleared for all diplomats (among which there are Raymond Davises too) This approach they are applying in other areas too. Notice Lahore and Peshawar are so peaceful today compared to 2 or 3 years ago. Why is that? Because Pakistan finially put travel restrictions on these foreigners. Once you lift the travel restrictions, be prepared for suicide bombings every day in Lahore and Peshawar.
