It was with a heavy heart that I read the news of the demise of Younis Hayder Soomro. Melancholy crept in two fold: How the current pandemic claiming lives of those in the front lives so easily, and then how valiantly are the health workers fighting it, even those with known co-morbid sensitivities, such as age, as in the case of Dr Soomro. I had not met Dr Younis Soomro since fifty odd years, but have been closely following his professional career and his astute social imbibing; as I had a great respectful him, and knew that he has it in him to cause and make a change in the lives of the many. Why and how did I arrive at that conclusion? It’s because he was my leader in our shared Alma mater: Liaquat Medical College Jamshoro. That campaign speech of his still rings in my ears, where he explicitly condemned the use of parochialism and bigotry not only amongst his fellow students but society as a whole. After his accession to a Union Office, he turned out to be just that, inculcating a culture of acceptance and decent debates to arrive at prudent solutions to students’ problems. He took that in-field training and experience to his professional and social life, and became a catalyst for many changes to the health delivery system in Sindh. I’m sure his genetic lineage, his roots springing from the selfless Shaheed Allah Bux Soomro, who sacrificed his life for People’s Supremacy in governance. I salute you for your services for the have nots, dear Dr Younis Soomro; May you Rest In Peace. Feroze A Ursani Swansea IL USA 07-16-,20
